None. Especially on a lever action. Kids should learn to shoot with iron sights. Scopes are for sissies.

Agree. Or an old 3/4" Redfield fixed 4X. I have a few of these repros, they're excellent quality copies.

WP-4A > 3/4" Tube WolfPup 4X-24 High End Precision Scope - WIDE DUPLEX Reticle.    NOTE::: Fixed Power 4X means your zero stays put!   Wp-AB Rings Included.  8 Fully Multi Coated Green tint Lens;  ( not the blue tint coating like used in cheaply made scopes.) Fixed 4X Power Crystal clear view with 4-inch eye relief

I have a little BLR carbine, it's the only thing that doesn't look oversized.

Epilogue since this thread was bumped: replaced the buckhorn rear sight with an aperture from skinnersights. Shot it a couple times since then and am very happy with that decision.

Way more fun with a scope on it for the kids, both big and small. Check out Nikon's PROSTAFF Rimfire scope in 2-7 x32 or if you want something a bit better look at a MONARCH 3 2-8. Lower profile and still great sight pic for getting on targets and making an accurate shot.
