My first .22 is the Marlin 60. Shoots accurately and holds a few more than 10 rounds. The biggest downside, in my opinion, is having to extract the follower rod to unload the tube when a ceasefire is called. Don't like having my hand anywhere near the muzzle of a loaded rifle. Secondly, there aren't many accessories for it. You can buy a cylindrical loader to save time at the bench, but I haven't tried that. Also, trigger is a bit stiff.

10/22 - ubiquitous, reliable, fun, accurate, highly customizable. You can make it into an awesome target rifle, like earlier in this thread, or dress it up as a Tommy Gun....and pretty much everything in between. It is much more accurate to call it the AR15 of .22 rifles because there are so many options. Trigger doesn't feel as stiff as my other .22 rifles and I can always buy a replacement. The rotary mags are very reliable.

597 - I find the column-stacked magazines on this model to be a bit finicky. I have 3 mags that each hold a different amount: 7, 8, & 10. I've had a few stovepipes even after replacing the mags with the latest versions from the factory. On the plus side, they replaced them just for the cost of me shipping mine to them. Trigger is a bit stiff. IIRC, this is currently the least expensive of the 3 out there.

All 3 are fun and accurate. You just have to figure out what matters most to you. Can't speak towards other semi models.

Do not try and bend the spoon, that's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth...there is no spoon.

Good points, that's why the 795 is a good rifle to consider. There are also aftermarket trigger upgrades available.

I have a 60, son has the 10/22. Pros: the 60 is mine. cons: the 10/22 is his. Both are great for plinking.

if you go bolt action the CZs are VERY accurate rifles outta the box and are within your price range...also very easy to swap barrels and go from 22LR to 22mag or a 17.

Polish it up occasionally, keep it bright and shiney.
