Ok, but aguila sss 60gr. subsonic is not representative of all subsonic ammo.

A fairly large portion of these: http://www.midwayusa.com/find?sortby...ensionid=16330

happen to be subsonic. Subsonic simply means, it's not breaking the sound barrier, which is roughly 1100fps at sea level, a lot of those are 1000-1050 out of a rifle(and sometimes slower). The reason being, is that if the round stays subsonic, it doesn't encounter the transonic zone going downrange as it slows down in the air.

That's not the same as the heavy 60gr, or even lighter 20gr. primer only loads that can have cycling issues, but they're subsonic as well.

I could not get CCI Quiet rounds to cycle a 10/22 with a Mist barrel. I tried the springs also and nada.

There are many brands of sub sonic .22 lr ammo out there, some brands will cycle in some semi autos. Only way to find out is to try the particular ammo in your gun.

CCI quiet ammo is not to be confused with other sub sonic ammo as it is less powerful and probably won't cycle in any actions.

Won't cycle in most semis, but will in pumps and bolts.

sounds like that would be 50/50 FTF/FTE with expensive 22 sub ammo falling into dirt or getting bent.

My old Rem 597 worked fine with Subsonic, and so did my buddy's. Rem says "most advanced 22 auto rifle action" and maybe they sort of have a point.

Subsonic is a heavier round, not necessarily less powerful. But maybe little less recoil IIRC.

Stock 10/22 will not reliably cycle subsonic ammo. As others have said, most "match" ammo is subsonic (under ~1100 fps)

Change out the guide rod spring and you should have no problem with "match" ammo. I have a Kidd "white" spring in my 10/22 with Kidd barrel and it cycles Wolf Rifle Match, Wolf Match Target, SK Rifle Match, Norma TAC-22 and other subsonic ammo fine. It also cycles CCI AR-Tac fine as well, which is not subsonic.

However, if by subsonic you mean Aguila Colibri or Super Colibri, which are primer only rounds, your 10/22 will not cycle those and you will have to manually charge the bolt.

I tried it in both a 10/22 and a bolt action RAR. The bolt is much quieter. So if noise is the issue, the bolt is the way to go. As others have stated, a good excuse to buy another gun.

Bullet weight alone does not mean anything. Many subsonic .22 rounds have LIGHTER bullets. Some .22lr subsonic rounds have heavier bullets. Heavier bullets tend to increase recoil. That's basic physics and you probably won't have that class until high school.

I think radiusing and polishing the bolt probably makes the most difference. My 10/22 has a stock recoil spring/charging handle, and an extra power hammer spring (which should make it cycling more difficult), but will cycle with any match, target, and standard velocity ammo I've tried in it.

OP's original post-yes, my 10/22 will cycle sub sonic ammo but the report is A LOT louder than a bolt gun with the same ammo.

most 10/22's wont cycle subs with consistent results. The actions on 10/22's are fairly easy to clean up however. As mentioned, bolt radius, smoother charging handle & a mild receiver polish can improve results. So far I've tried the Aguila lead nose 1020 FPS subs & it's good. One of my 22 rifles is a freak!

I must be really lucky . Both of my stock 10/22s have cycled all of my subsonic rounds perfectly.

And they are perfect bolt actions with shorts and colibris, no jams.

First you are chopping up historic vintage rifles and sticking them in cheap and nasty looking plastic "dildo" stocks that look like some kind of futuristic sex toy that gay space aliens stick up each other's butts.

Have you tried CCI standard velocity? Green Tag? Wolf Match? RWS? etc? Or, are you just trying the ones with marketing labelled "subsonic"?

Agreed! I shoot 22 shorts in my 10/22 and simply keep my thumb on the charging handle to keep it from cycling. This almost completely quiets the rifle. Then I just manipulate the CH manually.

Bro, for that cost I would buy a cricket 22 and a ton of ammo.

I agree that an extra firearm is a good thing, but I would suggest you learn to manually cycle the 10/22 and you'll be happy. Plus it is not like the squirrels won't be back shortly. You wont find anymore cotton tails in my neighborhood, but for a while I did have frequent BBQs.
