AimPoint or Eotech

+1, also with the EOTech reticle you can use the 65MOA circle for rudimentary ranging.Sigh...
Aimpoints are more durable and have longer battery life. Until recently, they only came with large MOA red dots which made engaging man-sized targets beyond 200m somewhat problematic. The advantage of the EOTech is the 65/1 MOA reticle which allows very fast acquisition with the ring yet gives you accuracy at distance with the dot. This is why I chose EOTech over Aimpoint in the Sandbox. With that said, EOTech's have always been a bit more complicated to manipulate and have had issues with shutting off mid-recoil. This has apparently been resolved in more recent builds.
Bottom line - both are excellent for what they are designed for and choosing one is really a matter of your needs and preference.Comment

"Donut of Death"
You can estimate range by how large or small the target appears in the reticle. Take a look at Mike Pannone's "M16/M4 Handbook," page 82.
This link explains and it looks like this poster used the same reticle images as Mr. Pannone.

i use both...
but in the end, i think i would prefer an aimpoint over an eotech (especially in 3 gun competition)
aimpoint controls are easier
aimpoint battery life is a LOT LOT LOT longer
aimpoint dots are easier to aim with than eotech (my opinion anyway)

Eotech for the faster reticle with small dot for precision. Most shooting I would imagine being involved in would be at close range where the big circle would be good enough. Btw the XPS models have the battery mounted sideways in the optic, which improves reliability over the older versions which had some issues with the battery springs wearing out.Comment

Good link from Grapevine!
It's rudimentary as in combat effective ranging. Basically, 65MOA is 65" at 100 yds. That's 5 ft 5 in, so you can sort of quickly guesstimate range by comparing the height of the threats to the circle. As in the linked diagram, if a person standing upright takes up the entire circle, they're about 100 yds away. If they take up half the circle, then they're about 200 yds away, and so on. If you have a sense of typical height of combatants vs the 5'5" benchmark, you can sort of shade one way or the other to get more precise.Comment

I am thinking about taking my 20x scope off my AR and going to an aimpoint or eotech.Comment

To me the EoTech is faster due to the wider field of view and the peripheral view is better. The Aimpoint has a battery life that is unmatched and they are very reliable.
It really comes down to what one you really like.

I prefer the Eotech's reticle over the aimpoint. I previously had an Aimpoint M4. Like many have said tho, in terms of durability and battery life the aimpoint is unmatched. HOWEVER, Im not kicking down doors and clearing houses anytime soon or spending years out in a post apocalyptic world. I'm faster with the eotech, so thats whats on my weapon.Comment
