    Green Dot vs Red Dot??

Looking at possibly getting a Holson 510C for my AR, and keep reading the Green dots may be better that red dots now. Any experiences?

I'm looking for a donut and dot as my eyes are not what they used to be. I fitted a little AT3 on my 10/22, which is fun and helps for my eyes vs iron sights. I have astigmatism, which doesn't help to get the dot or sight in sharp focus, figured a donut and dot will be more helpful that just a flared dot.

If I use glasses it greatly helps to focus on iron sights, but found it not very helpful with the AT3 - glasses are computer glasses so focus distance is close to iron sights on rifle and handguns. They actually make the dot flare up more than without, maybe closer distance to my eye??

Interesting side note is that the peep sights on the smallest hole actually helps a bit on the AR. Getting older sucks.........

Easy and surprisingly little known astigmatism solving trick. Try putting a cheap rear BUIS with a small aperture on the rifle, and look through the aperture while aiming. The dot will be much more precise.

I noticed using the small aperture on the AR worked to help get the front sight sharply in focus, worked well to get good groupings at 50 yds. Wonder if I can get something to fit on the 10/22 that I can flip up/down like the MBUS on the AR??

Anyway back to my current question on green vs red. I can setup the 510 to be co-witness with the MBUS, but may prefer a 1/3. Not really looking for bulls eye shooting, just getting decent groupings off hand in the future with faster target acquisition.

For a fighting rifle, I always choose red. For a range rifle, it's personal preference.

Optics with green reticles tend to have only 1/5th the battery life compared to the red reticles.

Men are more likely to be color blind which makes picking up the red dot very challenging. The green dot is easier to see as green is one of the colors that your eyes have evolved to discern

I like my green ECOG a lot

I have both in Holsun on my AR platforms. I prefer red for low light situations while green works well in bright day light. I also have astigmatism, in both eyes. It is hard for me to say which I prefer overall. Green does or should have a longer battery life.

Red has a 5-year battery life on setting 5 while green only has a 1-year battery life on the same setting.

I think that people are confusing sights/reticles with lasers - it is almost unanimously agreed upon that green lasers are better/more visible than red, but as for the reticle in an optic I'm not sure that it is going to make that much of a difference

Whatever you do, DONT GET A HOLOSUN.

Your life/rifle is worth more than $150 bucks

On Holosun's website they state the same 50,000 hour battery life for both green & red units with setting 6 (not sure if that is the same for both). Not sure if I'm missing anything.

I will mostly use it for range use, not planning any active duty scenarios with it. It might be used for HD/SD. I figure worst comes to worst I can pop it off and just use the iron sights.

What is wrong with Holosun, they seem to be getting good reviews (talking about the higher end 510 units)?

It has been a few decades but I recall the amount of energy of the wave length of green is less than red.

I have astigmatism. I have had good luck with prism sights such as Vortex Spitfire. Primary Arms also offers a few prism scopes as well. These optics are fixed magnification with variable focus, and the ability to adjust reticle color from red to green by turning a dial. When powered off (or dead battery), the reticle is black. They use a fairly common CR2032 battery. I keep a couple spares in the grip compartment. My Vortex sights have retained zero over time.

Given my vision issues, these have worked well for me. YMMV

Green is slightly faster especially in low light, but may get lost in a brush/wooded area. I run red dots and fiber optic sights to keep everything consistent.

Stupid me I thought this had to do with reloading powders.
