Thanks - interesting info. If they spec'ed it at 1/3 MOA, that would probably turn some people off to it, thinking it's too small.

I'l have to try a few tests on mine.

Had a barska 1x32 RDS on my EBR and switched to an Eotech. World of difference. Thanks Eotech.

Eotech and Aimpoint are two different applications of holography and each has it's own strengths and weaknesses.

That said, I think the Eotech Holosights are the mutts' nuts of "red dot" sights. As my eyes got older I was having more and more trouble using iron sights. Without a scope, even with a ghost ring, I got headaches after a couple of hours. Shooting just wasn't any fun any more. Then I discovered the red dots and the holosights. Now I go to the range every chance I get.

I have a genuine Eotech on one of my hunting rifles (BLR) and a Bushnell (made by Eotech) on a Marlin '94c I keep for home defense and as a "camp carbine". I have two Bushnells that don't have a home yet but only about six rifles one would go really well on.

This is going to sound like I am bashing EoTech but I am not.

As far as Red Dot goes, EoTech is my favorite. Very well built. The only down side is relying on batteries. If the Trijicon 30mm Red Dot sight had a brighter tritium reticle it would be a better option. But without battery power it is next to impossible to see (they did that to accomodate night vision).

So I run a Trijicon ACOG TA31F on my AR. The chevron is super bright and no batteries to fail on you and no button to push to be able to use it. Of Course it costs twice as much as the EoTech. Since it has mangification it would not be as good for clearing houses as an EoTech...but hopefully that is not in my future. I have it on an American Defense Mount that has a QD lever so if I do have to so something like that I am back to my Trijicon Night Sights (I upraded my irons as well) in seconds.

All that said...if I did not have an ACOG...I would definately have an EoTech. In the world of Red Dot, EoTech is king!

I have both.... EOTech and ACOG.... I love them both.... as they are for different purpose!

EOTech is a CQB, door kicker optic.... while ACOG is a medium range engagement optic, outdoor patrol, urban patrol etc...

While you can certainly get a obj-lens cover and try to use the ACOG as 1x ocular sight, but still, you are setting yourself up with "blind spots" .... and you just reduced your survivability when your vision may be your best assault/defense tool you've got....

I guess I will never ever be able to change this here

Aimpoints are NOT holographic sights. They (along with all other red dot sights) are red or green LEDs projected onto the front glass. That is not holographic, its standard projection. That technology has been around for 30 years in the firearms optic industry. EOTech is the only current optic manufacturer who uses holographic technology in small-arm weapon sights.

Its like Clip vs Magazine, Carbine vs Rifle, pistol vs revolver terminology.

This was bugging me so I called a college friend and former colleague of mine who did his PhD work in holography and optics and asked him about this.

I never disputed that the Aimpoints are reflex sights but I was under the impression that they used holography to create the images that are reflected from the dichroic lens. My friend asked me one question and I realized I was wrong.

How long do the batteries last?

The EOTech 512 uses 2 AA batteries with a combined milliamp hour rating of about 2*2200 = 4400 mAh (Duracell Procell) or 2*3000 = 6000 mAh (Energizer E2). EOTech claims at setting 12 of 20 that the alkaline batteries will last 600 hours and the lithium batteries will last 1000 hours.

The Aimpoint Comp M4 uses a single AA battery which Aimpoint claims will last 80,000 hours. There is no way a AA battery of any type will drive a 600-650 nm laser or laser diode for that long. Not with current technology.

So Dieselpower is right. The Aimpoints are not holographic and in fact, the lack of a laser is a selling point on their website. The sight uses passive collimation of a red light source -- presumably an LED -- and reflects the dot from a curved lens.
