Ok so my mothers boyfriend recently found a pistol in his home. It was from his deciesed first wife. He is not a gun guy at all. From the pictures it was a nice black powder colt. Had a few friends look at pics, they all said from the pics he should have it checked out. He took it to a firearms expert at the local museum where he is in SC. It turns out it is a model 1860 colt, produced in 1862. It is all original and perfectly functional. Well today he called and said he would like me to take it as he doesn't want it and none of his family likes guns. I plan on calling him tomorrow and double and triple checking that's what he wants to do before excepting. My question is will this gun be fine to ship regular insured mail between SC and Ca? Will I need a FFL? Im pretty sure i know the answer but just want to double check. Thanks guys.

No FFL. Try and get it in person if you can- I would be wary of shipping that.
Treat it nice. It is special, and very old.So I was driving home from the range and I noticed that the scent of warm steel, burnt gunpowder and lukewarm coffee combined and smelled oddly of... Peanut butter?! Man, the Hoppe's is going to my head.

Nice Colt 1860 Army -
Looks good condition - wood is outstanding.
$1300 - $2000 depending on many things.
Do a google search on "Colt 1860 Army" - to see the cross range of prices.
Is yours and 1860 .44 or the '61 in .36 ?
Regardless, nice revolver for the collection - not super rare, but very desirable.Pitfighter.

I'm not sure of caliber. Like I said it is a gift from my mothers boyfriend. I dont own any black powder guns, this will be the first. I'm not real concerned with the monetary value. It's more of a really cool piece of history. The fact I was born in SC and raised in Louisiana and its a confederate pistol is cool also. I am figuring on a nice display box for it. I am also planning on seeing if colt has any records on it. If any one has searched out records from colt and could give me info that would be great too.Comment

Understand ref. the value, that was for insurance - when you mail it.
How do you know it was a confederate pistol? Just out of curiosity.
Ref. Archival search - Go to Colt's website all the info. is there - they are very helpful, doing this on a revolver for me right now - http://www.colt.com/Catalog/ArchiveServices.aspxPitfighter.

Just from what my mothers boyfriend told me it came from his late wife's grandfather who served in the civil war. He was a confederate soldier. However the museum expert he had look at it did say it was a civilian model. So maybe it wasnt a confederate weapon. I guess it was an assumption made in excitement by a southerner, lol. Anyway isn't that have the fun? Finding the history on it. Maybe colt can help with that. It's a cool piece of history anyway. Lol, guess I better find out if it's some yanks gun before I sit it a display box with a rebel flag. LolUnderstand ref. the value, that was for insurance - when you mail it.
