Only cheap Chinese scope I have experience with is Center Point 4-16 it's good but doesn't have very long eye relief. Before you painted it I'd have suggested look on ebay for a Weaver k4 or JC Higgins it was made by Weaver. Now I'd say if cheap scope doesn't work out for ya watch ebay for a Bushnell Scopechief. They are really a good scope you can probably find for little more than you paid for the cheapie scope.
Oh yeah the Scopechief wouldn't be very good on a 300 win mag either, it doesn't have very long eye relief but they're really bright and clear would be perfect on a 270.

Ya i looked at the jc higgin scopes on ebay. going for waaay too much money lol. I dont want to pay $100 for a scope for a rifle I paid $150 for. It has dovetail mounts on it right now too. This scope has 3.5" eye relief. Cant be any worse than those cheap scopes that come in savage or remington rifle packages. Il only be shooting out to 100 yards 250 max

Yep just something about the JC Higgins name makes them go for quite a bit more than Weaver even though they're the same scope.

Build one with those components, and you'll have close to $1000 wrapped up in it.
            This!

About the finest bolt actions made at the time. FN Mauser action, chrome lined barrel. I found an old ad from 1955 that had these listed at Sears for like $300.....in 1955. In todays money thats $1000.
NOT a crappy gun at all.
My FIL has one in .270. The bluing is deep and glossy and the stock is gorgeous walnut with hand cut checkering.
            I hope to inherit it.

I second that! I saw a guy at the range a few years ago with a JC Higgins FN Mauser in 30-06. He had just bought it for a really low price, didn't know Mausers, and was kind of unsure whether it was "worth it."

"Dude!" I tell him. What matters is it's a really nice FN commercial Mauser in very good shape. What's not to like?

I'd guess its a good shooter. Probably has killed a lot of game and hopefully has much more in its future. Old rifles like that were meant to shoot and be utilitarian. Nothing wrong with that at all. In fact there tons of good in that.

You're looking at it the wrong way. A bolt 270 for $150 is a steal. Period.

It is hard to find a nice bolt action .22 for $150. I got one for 50 last year cash and carry, but i lucked out on that one big time.

Why would you want to do that?

I'm just curious, about what you'd think the gain would be.

Cutting the barrel down would save some weight and maybe make it more "handy", but IMO it would curtail the usefulness of the .270 round.

Does this mean that my J.C. Higgins 9 shot .22lr revolver is a well made weapon too? It is super old but it works great.

well I wanted it to be a little more "tacticool" but I was thinking the same. The hole reason a .270 is a good round is its high velocity. Its like a 16'' .223 vs a 20''. quite a difference in velocity
