    Mosin Barrel Blockage

Hey guys, I have a problem that I would like to bring to you and hear your advice before I do anything drastic. One of my Mosin Nagants has a completely blocked up barrel. The culprit? A wooden dowel rod that some numbskull wedged into the full length of the barrel in an attempt to clean it. I have tried tapping the rod at one end with another dowel rod but no progress has been made. Its stuck in there incredibly well and I haven't the slightest idea as to how to remove it. Any suggestions?

Kill it with fire. Seriously. It won't hurt the barrel. Use a propane torch and light it up. I would take the action out of the stock though, just to make the job easier.

The thought of using a torce passed through my mind. But I have my concerns... Like, will taking a torch that is that hot damage the barrel? Or will the wood catch fire if its so snug inside the barrel where little oxygen can get to it?

Heat will make the barrel bigger, so the stuck dowel could be easier to tap out, if the dowel doesn't burn.

solid brass rod as large as you can fit in the bore, tap out from the opposite side.

I'm leaning toward the brass dowel rod, mainly because I don't own a propane or butane torch. Would greasing up the barrel regularly for a few days help slick up the wood rod before I try to punch it out?

First thought was how to chemically dissolve wood... but I am not sure that is possible? ... Actually just googled that because I was curious. It is possible - if you are a chemist with a lab.

soak it in water to try to soften it? I am thinking PVC pipe capped at one end and filled with water. Then pound it out?

Well if heat isn't the answer, find a neighbor with a termite infestation, grab a hand full of the little boggers and let them eat the wooden dowel.

I think water would make the wood swell...making the situation worse.

No to the water! Yes to the heat, or try to carefully drill a start hole in one end of the dowel then screw in a wood screw to give you some thing to grab onto then yank at it with some vice grips.

Pour denaturized alcohol so the wood soaks it up then light it

Don't use water or spray oil. Trust me.

Yeah, that's as dumb an idea as trying to dissolve the wood in water.

                              Thats a crazy problem

Maybe the guy was trying to slug the barrel with the dowel

                              Anyway my thoughts are

1 Pour Kroil in there, a lot as the wood will soak it up. Let it soak for a few days and see if it will budge when pounded

2 Try to force grease into the bore with a grease gun. The pressure may loosen it, it will lube it at least

3 Use a 1/4" drill with some sort of brass sleeve to protect the rifling. Allow a little of the bit to protrude from the sleeve and drill into the wood. Keep adding sections of sleeve as you work the drill further in

                              Good luck
