If you're interested in a Winchester 1897 or Model 12, you might also consider a Stevens 520A (single hump receiver with tang safety), 520-30 (like the 520A but WWII military issue only) or 620 (no hump, cross-bolt safety behind trigger guard). Like the 1897, the 520/620 is basically a JMBrowning design and also a take-down like the 1897 and Model 12, is made about as well (but maybe not quite as nice a finish), and in equivalent condition costs maybe a third the price of the Winchesters. See attached article link:

"Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." ~ C. S. Lewis

Remington Model 31. It's, by far, the nicest pump gun ever made, IMO. Winchester Model 12 is a competitive 2nd.

The 97 is the coolest, but that includes the price tag to go with.

Just scored a Remington 31 Special Police after looking for several years. Action is smooth as glass!

The jc Higgins model 20 mentioned in this thread is a great buy. I've got a deluxe one with the swappable chokes that I refinished and got back to working order. Smoothest action I've ever felt. Looking to get another beater one to turn into a home defense shotgun.

I have a Remington 11-48 that is a beater, but runs flawlessly.

I just sent the buttstock for this to have the recoil pad replaced, gun is a AH Fox Sterlingworth 12 ga and is a 100 years old, the finish is what you'd expect of a field gun that has seen a lot of use. I replaced the recoil pad because the other had just crumbled from age. Going to shoot some trap with it soon as the stock gets back.

I kinda like the ultra rare 20ga Russian trench gun called the Moberg (Mossberg/Mosin).

                            Ithaca 37.

Like the Winchester 12 all the 37 parts are machined, none are stamped.

Unlike the 12, there are fewer parts in the 37 and thus less to go wrong.

Unlike the 12, the Ithaca 37 was so good that demand never slacked and so they are still being made today (and these factory new ones are at least as good as the old, probably better).

Unlike the 870 and Mossy 500, you won't see them at your LGS. Because no salesmen or showroom is necessary to sell them, the are snapped up as they roll off the line and shipped direct to the buyer at prices under half what a new Browning/Benelli auto costs.

I got lucky and scored a 870 wingmaster for $300. I also bought a 1897 with a 30 inch barrel. I took it to Jeff Tandy in hemet who cut it down to 20 reworked action and reblued it. I also added a reproduction heatshield so I now have a fake trench gun.
