some wonder why we collect mosins, well being fairly cheep you can fill out a collection without going broke. try filling out a collection of mausers or M1s. if K 98s were 100-150 on sale and ammo was .18c maybe i would like mausers more.

I'm still trying to get one that is not counter bored. The first two shoot well though. I haven't shot the laminate yet.

What is it that I've heard said? The only thing worse than a counter bored Mosin is one that should have been counter bored?

Had this posted in the galelry forum as well. Just picked up my first Mosin yesterday from a fellow calgunner! Great looking rifle. From my minimal knowledge and research it seem its a 1926 Izhevsk Hex with a post-war laminated stock which the shellac is peeling in some places. Crown looks good, all matching numbers and its not counterbored. Heres some pics. If I have any of my info wrong please let me know.

Picked up my Mosin on Tues. Got it apart for cleaning right now. Will get more after all the cosmo is off

Question. There's shellac on the escutcheons. How can I remove it from them without damaging the shellac on the wood? Just be careful? What should I use?

Armistice, denatured alcohol is the thing to remove shellac (or make it from pellets, or thin it in liquid form). My laminated Mosin has exactly the same thing (sloppily applied shellac covering part of the escutheons).

I haven't done anything about it. Figure I will take care of it when, as is likely, I have to re-shellac the stock.

In your case, just get masking tape and very carefully apply it (you'll have to cut/tear lots of small strips and overlap) to the wood surrounding the escutcheons so no wood is exposed next to the metal. Just isolate the metal from the wood.

Then take a clean rag damp with denatured alcohol (not dripping or soaked) and very very carefully rub just the metal and remove the shellac. Should come right off.

shooter1975, nice rifle. Your info is correct, as far as the basics - 1926 hex Izhevsk. I have a 1925 just like it (but with a birch solid stock).

I like the pre-1930 Mosins with the arsenal name written out in Russian on the stamping (yours says "Izhevsk Armaments Factory"). The Tulas are even better - "First Armaments Factory of the USSR at Tula" is the full translation of their stampings. I speak Russian so it's especially nice to have those two pre-1930 rifles.

The cabinet is about to be full when my second Garand arrives soon, but it sure is tempting to hunt for another Mosin while the FFL-03 is still worth something in this ridiculous state ....
