Mine arrives Monday, I will let you know. I would be very surprised if it was a Tula, you never know, but odds are it will be a '43 or '44 Izhevsk.

Came yesterday. '42 Izhevsk, very, very dark stock, looks like Bobby's only darker, was going to shoot some photos, then my back went out, spent all day yesterday, face down on the floor, couldn't even sit in a chair. Will post some pictures as soon as I am more mobile. The receiver almost looks scrubbed, the little Izhevsk coat of arms is visible on the upper, the middle where the date usually is looks like it has some swirl marks and then I can very faintly just see "42", not 1942. All of the numbers match.

Strange, the crown looks non-counterbored, but it is polished silver, not blued. All of my other Mosins with the polished crown are counterbored, the ones that are not polished (blued) are not counterbored.

I know to use mineral spirits on the metal to remove the cosmoline, but the stock is literally coated (as is the whole rifle) with cosmoline. I have used paper towels and the black trash bag in the sun trick before, is there a better way to remove cosmoline from the wood that won't harm the wood? I have never received a Mosin with this much cosmoline.

My '37 Iz didn't have bluing on the crown and was not counterbored. Of course, the bluing had worn off the barrel about 4" back of the muzzle and had been painted, too, which quickly flaked off.

As far as removing cosmo, a hair dryer works well if you're really patient. I'd say use the trash bag method and then spot heat with a hairdryer or other heat source if that doesn't do the trick. Some people use a heat gun, but you've got to be careful with it so you don't scorch the wood.

Then again, on my main Mosin shooter, I've trash bagged it, wiped it down, hair-dryered it... and on warm days it still leaks a little cosmo. It's all part of their charm.

Showed my gf the pictures of the laminate stock...she's in love. Will probably order one, despite the fact that our hex receiver model from last month hasn't even had the cosmoline washed off yet. :facepalm

I got a 1943 Tula laminated stock from Classic last week, Is it a common one? All number matching, shinny bore and over all in excellent shape.
It was one in the 5 pack, others were Izhvesh 42 and 43. It was a group purchase and I get to keep the Tula.

                  thanks

The Tulas are less common than the Izhevsks but not that uncommon. Might be worth a few bucks more someday. I just like the star, I only have one Tula, a '55 SKS. No Mosin Tulas.

Mineral spirits wont harm shellac on the stock.

My prefered method is using WD40 ( safe on shellac - tough on cosmoline ) and a roll of paper towels. Heat gun to soften it up if the cosmo is really glopped on.

i also found out wd 40 works great if you want to not harm the shellac. 2 of my mosins had nice wood and shellac, all i did was rub wd 40 on it and wiped it off. helps keep the shellac from flaking off.

                            I'm in.

It's my third Mosin. I also don't have a laminate. I upgraded to the X. Pics when I receive it and get it out of jail.

Cap, I'll see you up at the glass factory sometime. Regarding cosmoline; I just leave the wood stock in my car laying on some towels when it's sunny outside. The cosmoline wipes off very nice.

Mountain bikes are another of my passions. I'm going to have to start selling some bikes.

I am glad that I bought some Prvi 7.62x54R ammo. Now that the GF is closed, I can at least take my Mosins to Oak Tree or Angeles and still shoot them, granted at about .60 a shot instead of .18 but at least I can keep shooting them. Plus I will be fire forming nice clean brass for me to reload.

Down here in SD there is an indoor range that allows steel cased ammo so I can continue to shoot the surplus stuff locally. Shooting at the GF is the most fun though.

Classic has already shipped my MN! Fast. I just ordered it last night.
