Recoil pads also extend the length of the stock, which can help a lot. We 21st century people are larger than those 60+ years ago.

Really?? Maybe not pulling the rifle into you tight enough?

I'm not a built guy. I specialize in 12 ounce curls. Yet I've had no problems shooting my Mosin for hours out in Ocotillo. And thats with no buttpad, just has the metal plate.

Tender the next day, sure... maybe a little reddish scuff on my shoulder, wear it more like a battle wound with pride. But 100% not to the point where I would come home, jump on my computer and start posting about it.

Like I said, pull that rifle in tight and lean into a bit, Maybe that will help you not get so beat up.

I bought a M44 Mosin Nagant Rubber Recoil Butt Pad from Amazon.com and now I don't feel any recoil at all.

Exactly...I like the LOP with the pad much better.

I don't feel the effects of recoil.

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones...

I love the felt recoil of a mosin. It is a mark of accomplishment to have a nice black and blue bruise after running 100+ rounds down the barrel.

Of course a Mosin will kick more than an M1 Garand! The Garand is a gas-operated semi-auto, and that action will soak up some of that felt recoil. The Mosin, by contrast, is a bolt-action, so the only thing to soak up any recoil is the gun's own mass. In addition, that metal buttplate that Mosins have doesn't help matters. I shot a friend's unmodified M1903A3 Springfield in .30-06, and it kicked just as hard as my Mosin.

My first solution was to Velcro some oval-shaped cut-outs of that same 1/2 inch thick foam that they use for aerobics workout pads. One thickness tames the recoil considerably, and two make a Mosin downright pleasant to shoot regularly. A LimbSaver is another good choice.

If you choose a rubber buttpad, then the "squishier" the rubber, the better.

T, can you post up a pick of your solution? Sounds like a good idea and if it doesn't look just totally stupid to my eye, I might give it a go too.

Shoot 12 gauge 3 inch shells on the weekends. Come back in 6 months you won't feel anything.

                          this.

wear a hoodie youll be ok. or get the rubber pad, which helps a bit, but if you get one and you still suffer your shooting sucks.

the last thing you do as you squeeze the trigger should be to pull the rifle in close into your shoulder. its almost part of the trigger pull. i had a huge bruise the first time i shot my mosin too but figured it out and you will too if you give it some time and a bit of patience.

Yes, a Mosin has some recoil but it isn't so terrible. First time I shot an M44 I was surprised at how tame it was. Biggest problem with a buttpad is that you lose the efficacy of the steel skull crusher/butt plate.

(snicker) You do know that in addition to little Russian conscripts, little Vietnamese women also shot these. As did my then-9-year-old daughter.

I really hate to pick, but dude, really? I think you are doing something wrong. Your rifle weighs the better part of ten pounds. Even with heavy ball machinegun ammo it shouldn't hurt that much.

I agree. Even buckshot or slugs in standard length is worse.
