    Mosin Nagant! Ouch!

I took my Mosin 91/30 out to the range yesterday for the first time ever. I bought it a few months ago but I have been busy shooting other guns. I purchased 4 spam cans of 7.62x54r ammo in the months since I bought the Mosin. I figured with ammo that cheap, I could blow through it pretty quick.

So last night I took 100 rounds. I primarily went to shoot my Sig 1911, and I planned on quickly going through these 100 rounds once I went through the .45 that I brought.

I got through 27 rounds and I had enough. The first 15 or 20 rounds were ok. But after opening my 2nd brown papered container of 7.62x54r, my shoulder was starting to feel it.

That thing kicks like a beast and left me with a bruised shoulder! It is not a 'fun' gun to shoot. I've read a few people that compared the recoil of the 7.62x54r to that of the .30-06. No way. I own two .30-06 rifles: an M1 Garand and a GameMaster 760. I can shoot those all day long. This Mosin is terrible.

Now I'm stuck with 4 spam cans of ammo (minus 27 rounds) and a gun that I want to like, but don't want to be wincing after my 25th shot. My groups started pretty solid. I was at an indoor range and could only shoot in a standing unsupported position and was managing to get 1.5 inch groups at 25 yards for the first 15 rounds. After 15 rounds, my groups fell apart as my shouldered became tenderized.

I'm thinking of buying an aftermarket rubber/springy butt pad. Anyone else have luck with dampening the recoil of their 91/30?

I also had a problem with the gun: if I had a full or nearly full magazine (3 or 4 rounds) and fired, 40% of the time the magazine release under the rifle would come undone and all of the rounds would fall out. The catch seemed to be tight. Any solutions?

I use a Limbsaver slip on recoil pad. I have shot over 750 rounds and regularly shoot 100 rounds during my range session and never bruised. However, most of the time I am shooting on a bench rest. The cheap X-brand one that mounts to the stock in place of the steel plate is hard rubber and I've been told doesn't provide much relief.

BTW - what ammo are you shooting, light ball 148gr or heavy ball 182gr?

You just need to shoot it with a really thick wool conscript jacket. Also, if you are not seating that butt plate tightly into your shoulder, you will feel the pain.

i gym it up every single day. i can shoulder press 70lb dumbbells. i may not have the best bench, but i can rep 205.

i don't care what anyone says. that gun hurts after a brown bag of 20 bullets while wearing a thin t-shirt.

I'm 6'9" 330lbs and have a (very) well built upper body... I aint too proud to say the Mosin hits, and hits hard.

Check into the slip on LimbSaver mentioned earlier. I use one on my M44 and can shoot all day thanks to it. I just wish there was a more elegant solution. That pad literally slips all over the place, and will sometimes fall off. I wish there was a bolt on solution like the rubber one currently available (which I also have and tried and didn't like) combined with the softness of the LimbSaver.

I made a pad that i sling over my shoulder so i dont need one for every big kicking rifle i own...it takes the bulk of the kick off my shoulder just fine

Lol, yes, it kicks like a mule.
I made a recoil pad out of 1" thick neoprene pipe insulation.
Shot 60 rounds with it, no problem, and no bruises.
It's a great gun to shoot.

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.

You are doing it wrong. 45 kilo Red kids did it, and for days on end.

There is a technique, which starts by not being glued to the shooting bench. .303, .30-06, and especially 8mm in the Turk version, are as bad or worse. Those are only the ones I know.

I have a small/medium sized one and I haven't had it slip on me, even though it seems a tad larger than it should be.

                        Man up, Ivan!

Seriously - I'll buy that Mosin and those spam cans off you if you sell them at a decent price. I don't live very far...

I find there's much less pain shooting offhand; that nice flat butt spreads out the force.

Bench/prone kills me, too much force angled against my collarbone.

People always said to shoot it "chicken wing" with your elbow pointing out. After 30 or 40 rounds I would be sore so I started trying different ways.

Now I hold my elbow real tight to my side and forward a little and it tightens up the pocket that you put the butstock in. I can shoot 100+ rounds in a few hours and be fine.
