I was shooting at the bench and ouch.
Started standing, no problem. Easy shoot.

Then I got some ideas, now I have no problemo.

lol, you think the 91 is "bad" try sending some rounds down it's little brother the M44 or the M38, you will be begging for the 91. You can get used to it, try shooting from the standing or kneeling. These positions allow your body to "give" lessoning the felt recoil. If that fails, I'll make you an offer on that mule!

The carbines lose a lot of energy because of their short barrels, and don't weigh much less, so recoil is less from the shorties.

"giving" is the thing. You can have a rest, but that cannot be your fulcrum.

I use a Shooter's Friend slip on pad and have no trouble shooting any of my milsurps, including my Persian M49, which is a light 8 x 57 carbine.

Don't apologize for using one, either...most milsurps have a steel butt plate that doesn't feel very pleasant if it should happen to accidentally be touching bone when you touch one off.

              Easy on, easy off.

All good advice here. I don't use buttpads on my Mosins, but I'm a masochist and after +50 rounds I can understand the need for it.

Point taken, but IF Newton had mentioned fulcrums, I think he would agree with me.

If you glue yourself to the bench, (or prone), or to your rest, you have a foot or so of vertical give. Kneeling, two feet +, Standing, however tall you are. People who get sore and bruised shoulders are only lacking an inch or so of horizontal movement there.

                      Anyway, it can be done.

Someday I will try one of those straight pull Austrian rifles and see if they are the "worst".

To the OP, I got this one with one of my purchases. Never tried it until recently as I usually shoot 40 rounds and call it a day. Once I put it on and tried it, recoil felt like a 22 so now I usually bring it when I take friends to the range. I let them try it hardcore then with the pad.

You could also pick up some czech training ammo which is light loaded and supposedly good up to 200 yards.

This works great on my M38, M44, and 91/30.

I don't think that the extra muzzle velocity that the bullet eventually attains from a longer barrel effects the recoil. The lighter weight of the carbine does, however.

Not a big deal, but I am sure you are not right. The gas in my avatar picture is not there in pics of my 91/30. (both are sold and gone btw). With the usual surplus cartridge the carbines lose a lot of energy, and they are not much lighter. That is my experienced take anyway.

The pic is of a M38.

At one time I owned a M38, M39, two 91/30's, and thousand rounds of various x54. I don't think the short ones kick more, because the long barrels are more efficient. The short ones are a major kick in the pants, because of the burned eyebrow and audience excitement, but the long ones better because you really can hit stuff far away. (400 yards regularly), and the bullet is going faster and farther..........which is what you feel in your shoulder.

This pic was taken before sunset btw. The concussion is appreciable, the heat noticable. That is a lot of wasted gas, and I think offsets the 1 to 1.5 lb diff in weight between the carbines and rifle.
