    Modernizing my first SKS

So I was organizing my gun safe last night and found a Yugoslavian SKS.

I had bought this 5 years ago, as my first rifle. I remember sticking it in the safe back then, but life got busy and didn't have time to mess with it. It's been in storage in my safe all this time.

I have to clean it though, it's still packed with cosmoline. Otherwise, it's in pretty good shape

I want to modernize it, perhaps get a new stock (with a pistolgrip) on it.

Anyway, here's what it looks like:

It should be a fun little project. Anyone else here owns an SKS? What have you done to yours? I need some ideas

I would just leave it alone. Stock sks's just keep going up in value.

You know what would make it perfect? Rails. Put about fifteen rails on it, then you can hang twenty pounds of tactical accessories on it, including a Glock.

        That would make it AWESOME.....

On edit: All sarcasm aside, what is on the muzzle? It is a brake, right?

I'm not into all the tactical stuff. Maybe at most just a scope, but that's it.

Yes, it's a muzzle brake. I bought this from Big 5 sporting goods originally.

I'd leave it be. No point in FUBAR'ing a perfectly good SKS.

Resale doesn't matter. I'm not looking to sell it. I plan on holding on to it and actually going out and shooting it.

There are a ton of things that you can do to it to modernize it without Bubba-ing the heck out of it. Most of them don't require any permanant modifications. Those are the mods I would go with. I like the High Tech brand rear apperture sights. There are also scope mounts that either replace the dust cover with one that has a scope mount, or replace the rear sight leaf with something similar. There are a boatload of different stocks out there as well. Pick one that amuses you and have at it. Just don't chop up anything on your gun. You WILL regret it later.

I was thinking of a Tapco SKS stock like this:

Every time someone bubbas a milsurp rifle, God kills a kitten, and the devil pins the blame on a puppy.

While there may be plenty of SKS rifles around now, that won't always be the case.

Look at how many USGI WWII 1911's were butchered or hard chromed in the 60's and 70's because there were plenty to be had. Now, Not so much. Makes me sick.

That is a beautiful milsurp rifle and appears to be in excellent condition. Shoot it just the way it is. Not everything needs a pistol grip. If you want something with a pistol grip, build an AK or AR rifle.

Resale may not matter, but reputation does.

                      Tread carefully.

Not that I believe you forgot it for five years anyway.

I put aftermarket everything on my Yugo SKS, and regretted everything. There was absolutely nothing I did that actually improved the look, feel, or function of the gun. I ended up selling all the parts and leaving it stock. Modernize it if you please, but the SKS is one of those that is best left untouched.

well what do have here? A perfectly good cosmoline covered yugo...I say bubba the hell out of it. Why? because its a yugo and perfect candidate to tact out. Yes same with the chinese SKS as well (won't be bias today)

Cool part about Yugos/Chicoms or any SKS you can turn them back to original form easily. Just keep the wood and original metal parts.

Did this to one of my Chicom Paras. Its fun and cute looking and a good range toy.

Just FYI if your going to put a scope on it a little thermalite is all you need and it can hold zero

Slapped on a tapco mag just because and got it for 10 bucks. Hideous looking isn't it? but still fun

this why you buy a couple, one leave stock and one to bubba the heck out of it

I'm going against the grain here, but I put a Tapco stock and a red dot on mine. Ditched the funky spike bayonet too. I love it! Took it to the range and had a blast shooting it and I love the feel of the Tapco stock over the original.
I'm never selling it so it doesn't matter anyway .. what matters is me liking it and I do.
