They are magical because they are built like a swiss watch, and are the most accurate C and R rifle out there.

K31s are masterpieces of durability and precision. It's like comparing your Timex Indago with an Omega Seamaster or Rolex DayDate.

The crazy thing is can get a k31 for a couple hundred where the gun should sell for $1000.

I need to get me more K31s!
the impt. thing to remember about the whole "omg the swiss rifles are like swiss watches/rolexes..."

well yes. yes they are. but they only needed to make a few hundred thousand of them. they were able to deliver luxury precision to their army because their army was small.

there is no way a govt which had to outfit an army of millions of soldiers, especially in war time, could've afforded the precision or the time afforded to the bolt construction of the K31 and G11. The reason why the swiss stuff is so nice... is because they made as many of them, total, as the brits dropped into trenches after being shot during the Somme or Ypres; as many as the Russians lost in the first half of stalingrad alone...

so yeah. the swiss stuff is superior, but its the luxury of the gentleman's club. They only had to make a few hundred k of their rifles, and spent accordingly. if they'd had to outfit an army of 4million you bet they would've settled with a "good enough to git'er done" like the mosin smle g98...

that all being said, yeah the k31 is by far the finest best of breed example of an accurate bolt action you'll find. when you see swiss terrain and see what sort of terrain they envisioned fighting in it makes sense why; they pictured defending from high ground shooting down into valleys at huge, huge distances. yeah they'd've needed to be accurate at ranges the french and germans never would've considered since their countries just dont have that topography.

i myself have 2 k31s, 1 G11. would encourage everyone to get the former, the latter is sorta ... meh. still good, but the k31 is for sure an incremental improvment

Gentlemen, I'm pretty much at the crossroads where my next gun purchase would be an M-39 or a K-31 somehow...I guess I'm leaning towards the 'K...

I just need to regenerate some income (also because I agreed to buy another No.4 rifle on impulse (but with all the ammo I'm getting, it's a great deal)!

My man M.Sage said that he used to have a K-31 but that he switched to a Finn because he could use the sights better?

Does this mean that the sights would be narrower or what? Or could it have been just a personal quirk on his part?

The "U" notch in the rear sight of the K31 and M39 is about the same. The M39 has a wider front sight blade, which for many people is easier to focus on. And the key to accurate shooting (with iron sights) is to focus on the front sight.

The various Mausers have a very small "V" notch and the front sight blade is a pointy inverted V.

I'm pretty sure I would like the narrow sights. Now it's time to save.

Well, the problem is that EBR Works and myself just bought the last 30K of frangible protectiles the Hi Tech had. I doubt you'll ever find them for under 5 cents each again. But, we paid .0375 each plus shipping or, about 4 cents a round. For powder, I can use +/- 42gr Hi Techs WC846 at $95 per 8lbs. That, along with a 2 cent primer and reusing brass makes a pretty cheap plinking round.

Oh, you might be in luck. I just looked at Hi Tech's website and they are listing M-160s again. If you get any. I suggest hoarding them. When they are gone, they're gone.

I've also run 40ish grains of Varget under collet pulled surplus 147 grain bullets with great plinking results. The frangibles are lighter and I tend not to push them too fast or beyond 300 yards. The 147 grain bullets are fine for hitting steel at Angeles to 600 but, my eyes aren't good enough to shoot that far as consistantly as they used to be.

I bought a K31 from Big 5, when they first got them in stock, great trigger, shot to the point of aim @ 100 yds, very accurate........I ended up selling the k31......the stock did not fit me well, length of pull was rather short for me and I did not like the angle of the butt plate. I really could not say it was more accurate then my Swedish Mauser or my M39 rifle (with the right 7.62x54r load). The K31 was in the same ball park accuracy wise for me. This is based on my limited experience with the K31.....

Sometime in the 1980's I was walking through the mall in Merced, and big 5 had 31's on sale for $39.95. I bought one because it was Swedish, and the bolt was cool. Little did I know!
