    CMP Garand or SVT??

I've always wanted both, and recently I decided I was going to finally order a CMP Service Grade Garand, but I fondled another SVT a week ago, and now I'm thinking of getting one of those first?

Any one have both? opinions? SVT values these days?

I personally like the garand. There is tons of 7.62x54r suplus ammo out there so the SVT would probably be cheaper to shoot.

      i have both.

the M1 is the better rifle of the 2.

it's not as finicky, the gas system is much better, more accurate and less prone to jamming. that being said, the badass factor of the SVT40 greatly outweighs the M1's. you pull that out of the carrying case at the range and everybody is gonna look.

and, once you do figure out exactly what your SVT likes (ammo wise and gas setting wise) it is a powerful, awesome rifle.

a good SVT40 will set you back about $700+ currently

I also have both. I got my Garand ealier this year (CMP service) and I got my SVT last week. I do like them both but I like the SVT ALOT better. Personally I would try to snag an SVT first as the prices seem to be climbing. I got mine for a steal but the auctions seem to be going around $1000-$1200. Ive seen them down as low as $650 a few months ago.
The CMP Garands SHOULD be around for a bit longer. The service grades are a tremendous bargain I feel. $625ish shipped and that price should be steady until they run out (2 years they say).
As far as shooting the two, I like the SVT better. The Garand is definatly fun but the SVT just seem a bit more fun. I cant describe why. Maybe its because it took me over a year to find my SVT. SVT ammo is easier and cheaper to find.
They are both great rifles to own and shoot though and I wont get rid of either.

The SVT is going to be harder to find, and probably more expensive.

This really just comes down to personal taste.

Garand is good out to 600 yards practically, unless you have eagle vision. SVT sights are not as great.

Garand is the better overall gun, I'd say, despite that the SVT is cheaper to shoot simply because its sights give it greater flexibility at range.

Go SVT for now, as the prices seem to be on the rise, and the ammo is so friggin' cheap.

For now, the CMP seems to have a good stock of Service Grades so I think you can afford to wait a while. I just picked-up a SA Service Grade from the CMP. It came with new wood, and the rifle itself looks brand new. The barrel is dated 1/55 and the bore looks unused. It was 1+ muzzle and 3 T/E.

I too want both. My suggestion, while the SVT is cheaper to shoot, prices have been pretty stable for a while. I'd get the Garand. Even though CMP has said they have enough to last several years, you never know. Best to buy one at a good price now rather than wait and get hosed and have to buy one from a price gouger.

A poor-quality SVT (cracked stock, crap gas system, bad bore, etc) can't be easily repaired, while there are plenty of parts to fix up low-end Garands, meaning a good-quality SVT is a much better buy.

I have both and I honestly can't say which one puts a bigger smile on my face when I pull the trigger. I mean, BOTH rifles make me grin like a kid on Christmas morning. Sorry I'm no help.

I was at a match couple of months ago with my 15 year old son (he beat my score). We both were shooting the same rifle LMR barreled HRA up to 800 yards and hitting the target with HXP ammo. I have never shot the SVT but I am pretty confident the M1 can out shot an SVT due to better sights, manufacturing tolerances etc. Also that sound of the "tingggggg" after the 8th round is priceless. It always brings a smile on my face.

I'm sure the SVT is a good rifle but I'd go with the true Americana and will pick the iconic M1 over the SVT but then again I'm partial to US rifles.

I have both, and while the Garand may be the better built and more accurate rifle, I prefer shooting the SVT.

Eventually you're probably going to end up with both, but if you can find a good deal on a good SVT, I'd get that first. Garands come up for sale all the time, plus CMP will have them until they run out.
