I think Mauser hit it right..I have owned both, the M1 is a far better rifle, but the SVT is baddass to shoot. My SVT did tend to get brass stuck in the chamber from time to time, and is tougher (and due to the corrosive ammo) more necessary to clean. There are millions of M1s out there, so you will always be able to find one...not so with the SVTs. I would say if your only going to have one, and you intend to shoot it alot,go M1. If you think you eventually have to own both, get the SVT now while you can still find them.

I had the same question awhile back and decided to go with the M1 Garand and pick up an SVT-40 later and well know I have four M1 Garands and not a single SVT-40. lol.-General George S. Patton Jr.

Clearly the correct answer is you need both. Seems like the supply of SVT's is much more limited so I'd probably get that first.....unless I find a smoking deal on a Galil, a VZ-58, or an M-76....decisions decisions.....Originally posted by Daytripper63"Looking a bit angry, he asked why I thought it was a Republican truck. i also have both. The garand, like everyone says, shoots great. It sounds great. The SVT does not shoot as nice. The trigger feels as if your pulling it through gravel and rocks. The garand is a quality built rifle but its nice to have something that not everybody has. They will both bring a smile to your face after every shot.

You mean which one you're going to get FIRST? Garands trade hands in the WTS section frequently, SVT's not so often. If you get a good price on either, you can't go wrong. SVT is probably a bit more unusual for the general public, so the cool factor at the range would be a higher....NRA LIFE MemberComment

If you want a shooting rifle, get a Garand. If you want a "that's neat" at the range rifle, maybe the SVT is for you. There is no comparison as to shootability, the Garand wins hands down. I passed on a $500 SVT-40 about 4 years ago, I like rifles that shoot WELL. Any Garand I have that shot 4+ MOA got a new barrel several years ago. 2+ MOA or better is my threshold for "interesting" rifles.

SVT is cooler and ammo is cheaper. double-win scenario but your experience may vary. i really want a Tokarev...Comment

I have both but shoot the Garand more. The SVT is a very cool weapon and I like it a lot, but it has become more of a safe queen. If you plan on shooting and using, the Garand would seem like a more practical choice for me.Next to me in the blackness lay my oiled blue steel beauty. Hmm.. The "bare" stock and white bolt looked a lot like a Finn capture. Not all were stamped. Does it have the micro import mark just above the right scope rail? Perhaps someone stateside stripped the stock and removed the purple from the bolt.sigpic "On bended knee is no way to be free." - Eddie Vedder, "Guaranteed"

I would definitely buy an SVT-40 before I bought a Garand. My main reason would be that the SVT is cheaper to feed and exponentially more rare. Garands aren't even what I'd call uncommon. Every time I hit a rifle range I see at least one, if not more. I've only seen one SVT-40 in the same number of trips.Beretta PX4 Storm .40 S&W (Round Count 3,050) | Yugo M72 | Romy M44
