      1873 .22 Long

I recently acquired this 1873 .22. At first, due to the lack of a loading gate, I wasn't sure what it was(I hadn't cleaned it up at all at that point). Low and behold, I pick up the latest issue of American Rifleman and there is an article telling the story of the 1873, including the run of 22 Longs. That motivated me to start a little clean up to expose the markings.

My Google fu shows date of manufacture as 1890. But that date comes from the 1873 list. Does anyone know if that would be correct? I couldn't find and reference to the 22 models.

Also, does anyone have a source for a butt stock, preferably original? I plan to hang it on the wall, but it would sure look better complete.
      Thanks.

        Pic's of the 1886 as well as two others. a 94 in 30WCF and a Marlin 1893 in 32-40.
1886 was made early in 1893, and it is plated, a long time ago. Now we need to find out if it was one of the 229.
1894 was made mid to late 1909
1893 says 1906 according to Brophy, he did a pretty good job sorting out that mess of Marlin records.

Heatseeker, that's enough to make a grown man cry!
Who let it get like that?
Between 1873, and 1933, there were 720,610 Model 1873's made. A little more than 19,000 were made in .22 Short, and .22 Long. Introduced in 1884, and discontinued in 1904, it was the first .22 rimfire repeater in the US.
In 75% condition or better, they're a 5 figure rifle! Sold new in 1885 for $20!
That one was made in 1891, with 38,901 1873's made that year.
A while back on another forum, a guy wanted an ID on his grandpa's rusty old .22, that had been in the back of the closet for the last 80-100yrs. Other than some frosty rust that cleaned right off, the gun was in great condition. He figured it was just a $50 wall hanger. He may have crapped himself when I told him what it was, and what it was worth.
I've got a buttstock that a horse chewed off the whole butt plate while it was in the saddle scabbard. Yours if you want it for a wall hanger.

Trap, I can't really say how it ended up like that. A very close friend of my dad's who has fallen ill had it in his safe. He also has three pristine Weatherbys, a Rock Ola M1 carbine, a 1970's Model 94 and a gorgeous sporterized Winchester 1895 US Model 30. I am helping his wife sell everything off to help offset care costs. She wanted me to have the 1895, which her grandfather brought back from WW1. I will post pics of that one in the near future.

I asked the wife the story on the 73. She said she seems to remember her husband finding it on a hunting trip, but wasn't positive about that. Unfortunately, he couldn't answer any questions when I was there last.

I'd love to have the chewed up stock.

As previously mentioned, I was gifted this sporterized 1895 US Model 30, serial # 66312. I have finally found a minute to take and post a pic.

It is too bad that the originality of the rifle has been lost, but the sport job really is nicely done. The bluing is beautiful.

Let me know what you think.
