well, you have to go on faith a bit, sure.
but! there are things you can do. evaluate the seller with the feedback rating, and check their previous auctions. if they've been selling tons of similar type militaria, and their ratings are all good, you're ok.
i've been buying/selling on ebay since 1999; the guys who have good rep do so for a reason.
also, this particular bayo is ELSENER VICTORIA, which is known now by their commercial brand "victorinox" (i did a paper on this company as an MBA student); if the stamp is clearly visible and legible in the auction pic you're good to go, since if a repro stamp copies this one, they'll get sued.

They really have climbed in value haven't they?!
I just bought my first one about a month ago, but from what I've read these rifles use to go for less than $100 in some cases. In my opinion, a Swiss K31 rifle is one of the finest military surplus rifles you will find: in terms of both accuracy and craftsmanship. I paid $575 for the rifle (all #'s matching including stock and hanguard), 405 rounds of GP-11 and over 600 once-fired reloadable pieces of brass. Heres some pictures of mine just for fun:

I read that thread but didn't know it was you who posted it.
Well my K31 I got for $200, all the parts are matching, including the magazine. When I field striped it, the wood underneath was even stamped the serial number. Pretty crazy.-General George S. Patton Jr.

I guess it's been a couple years since I bought mine from Big 5 for $100 or so. It has the chewed up stock and the metal isn't perfect by any stretch of the imagination. Funny thing is I only got it because a friend at work kept talking about what a bargain they were and how well made and accurate they were. He had gone to several stores and picked one out to buy. Neither he nor the store clerk realized his driver's license was expired when they started the paperwork. Well the 10 days passed and when he went to get the rifle they wouldn't release it to him. He was upset he never went back to rebuy it....they made him eat the DROS fee. In the meantime I had read up on the K31 and it souded like a must have at the $100 they were selling for at the time. I ended up looking at a few stores till I found one that looked ok and got it. I think I have fired a whole 2 rounds of Wolf ammo through it. I need to get it out and wring it out and see if it lives up to its reputation for accuracy, but have been busy playing with other guns.
I love those bayonets!!! I really would have liked to get a cheap set of the Swiss diopter sights, but they always sold for $400 or so on Ebay when I saw them there. The aluminum St. Marie sights looked promising too. Anyone have the actual Swiss diopter???Last edited by Sheldon; 01-03-2010, 3:43 AM.Comment

I've owned about 10 or so K31s, 2K11s and 2 1911 rifles. I'm down to just a K11 and 3 K31s now. I decided I couldn't own one of everything ever made and kept the best examples for fun shooting. These are some that have since dwindled to the scoped 43, dioptered 43 and an April 54 (my birthdate!) along with the K11 made from a 1900 short rifle. The K31s, Lee Enfields, and 03s are my favorite pre 1945 military rifles.

smle man,
i was talking to Kevin at angeles about the differences between the model 11 and the k31. i've never shot the model11 Rifle so i had to take his word for it (he seems a most knowledgeable and congenial fellow), he was saying the pull on the earlier one is much harder/longer, and in general the k31 is must easier to handle. what do you think?"If the American Left wanted to decrease interest in shooting, they should have the government make it mandatory like they do here in Switzerland.
