I'm piecing together a M1 build. I notice there are two types of Bullet guides (other than stamped / Milled). Ones with a notch in the side and ones without. What was this notch added for? Does it matter which one I get? Thanks Justin

Gus Fisher is a famous guru for this platform.

the place you linked for the spring kit has bullet guides for $17. I understand it takes $13 to get a "meal" at Jack in the Box anymore; $4 more for a bullet guide is chump change.

PM me your address- I'll send along some clips
So one thing I did fail to note was that when I loaded by Enbloc clip into my Garand, the bolt would not go home. It took quite a bit of whacks to get it to go forward. I've shot other Garands and the bolt would easily go forward, sometimes it would need a light tap. But this one took a bit of work. Not sure if this has any relation with the issues.

I will also order a bullet guide and will send PM. Thank you sir!

FWIW, your rear sight is a Beretta part made under a contract wth the Danes.
The danish word fir left is vestre.

I agree with others here, sounds like your rifle may be a little out of timing.

Man, all this Garand talk makes me want to dig mine out. I bought the thing over 20 years ago and never got around to shooting it. I have quite a bit of ammo too.

I'd have to find a barn door as a target. No optic on it.

If it is a CMP rifle and does need a replacement bullet guide, I would contact them first. In the past they sent me replacement parts for M1 rifles that I got from them. A broken rear sight peep, an oprod with a worn tab that jumped from the track, a broken firing pin. All they wanted was the bad part in return.

I took my most recent CMP rifle to the range a two days ago for the first time in a couple of years. Shot Danish and FN ball in it and turned in about 2" 5 shot groups at 100 yds which with iron sights which is amazing performance for me. I think the sun light conditions had much to do with it.

I thought I was just about out of .30 ball but when opening mystery ammo cans in the shed found 600 rounds of .30 ball both LC and Danish. Guess I have to shoot the rifle some more.

Don't know what yer missing. Last time I went to the Carson City range (before moving) with some fellow employees we banged away with each other's stuff. When they left, I sat down and started a 2.5 hr shooting run of my favorite Garand. Been way too long since then.

Yikes twinsies! My favorite I believe re-arsenaled then never reissued, had packing grease in it. Direct from Army storage through CMP long before they started refinishing what they were sending

Nice rifle! Mine has a 1945 dated barrel matching the production date, so not shot much until it went through Letterkenny AD in1966 for an overhaul.

Nice rifle! That is about the timeframe I got mine from CMP.

Dug my birchwood Garand out: SA #3056236 SA BBL 5-63 (rebarreled) MW<0 TE <1.5.

It was full of arsenal grease when I got it, so possibly not reissued after rebuild or used very Lighty before storage.

Also found my last HRA hiding out there, (All HRA) #5776207 HRA BBL 2-52, MW 1.0, TE <1.

Where is that Stuart tank in your Avatar? There used to be one in a park in Gilroy or Salinas back in the late 1950's.

The first thing you should do is replace every single spring in the gun. I would also take it apart and make sure it is clean of old dried grease which can solidify and gunk up the movement of parts. I would speculate your issues are probably due to a worn recoil spring.

Mine has a lot of "originality" to it. A '44 barrel with no finish on it, etc.

Agreed. Orion 7 op rod spring is the one to get. Garands use grease, not oil. Grease for sliding parts, oil for rotating parts. Many people recommend Mobil 1. I'm just using a cheap NGL2.
