BBM, You said that crane has been replaced, when it's locked into place, push on the right side of the cylinder and see if the crane moves. It rotates counter clockwise, and the hand could be moving it outward enough to change the timing.

the problem may not be the hand itself, rather the window in the frame it rides in. S&W makes oversized hands for this problem.

you really should have Kuhnhausen's book to work on the revolver.

there's host of issues with the yoke that could also cause the problem.

            C) I've always wanted to take apart a S&W to see how things work
            D) I could have it delivered straight to my house with my C&R (I'm not in CA)

            and......

            E) It's a pimp gun!!!!

The exterior is rough but mostly just discolored with some pitting here and there. The bore was dirty but cleaned up to be nice and shiny. Under the side plate there was considerable hard dirt/grime as well as some surface rust, bit that cleaned up very nicely.

The only real issue with it is that it is out of time - the cylinder requires a slight nudge to lock into place. So - the hand will need to be replaced and fitted. If any of you happen to have one laying about in your parts drawer, shoot me a line. Otherwise, it's off to GPC for a replacement.

            I like that gun!

            Congrats.

Well, the new hand arrives today, so I'll find out shortly if that is the issue!

Just tried it, the crane does not move when locked into position.

I like it! It's got character and then some.
With older revolvers you want to check that it doesn't suffer from "Hammer push off" there are lots of videos on YouTube on how to do it safely. It's not the end of the world if the gun has it but you want to know if touching the cocked hammer will cause it to fall.

Secondly I don't want to disagree with what Cagunner said about the scene from taxi driver but I believe what "Easy Andy" the gun seller said about your revolver was...

"Look at that, it's a beautiful gun, nickel plated, snub nose, otherwise it's the same as a service revolver, it'll stop anything that moves. (Then he points down to the Magnum still on the bed) the Magnum, they use that in Africa to kill elephants. That .38 is a fine gun.
Some of these guns are like toys ( like the small .25 ACP pistols he was selling.) that
.38 you could go out and hammer nails with it all day long and come home and it will cut dead center every time. It's got a nice action to it and a heck of a wallop (on the receiving bullet end)."

But of course it's Hollywood so there are some errors like he calls a small Smith & Wesson .22 automatic pistol a Colt .25 automatic. And then he calls an Astra 380 a Walther. There are even more errors when Travis goes shooting later and the guns change a little bit during that gun range scene.

In case anyone has not seen the movie is the famous gun buying scene but it might not be for sensitive people or children due to Easy Andy's colorful phrases...

Yes, I'm familiar with that test. I test every one I handle for that very thing, and have found more than a few with that affliction. This one does not have that issue.

In have this same issue with my 1917 in .45

It has thus far kept me from shooting it.
Although in double-action it seems to be just fine.

Let us know how you get along fixing it.
I was going to take mine in to Americangunworks when I get back to the US.

The old Smith and Wessons are just wonderful revolvers, I prefer shooting them to my Colts (sacrilege I know!)

UPDATE - finally got the correct hand from Numrich. Comparing it to the original one from the gun shows that the original is heavily worn and does not have the crisp edges that the replacement does.

I dropped it in, and now the cylinder locks up tight as it should and the gun is no longer out of time. Time for a test run!!
