How would you paint a chipped up CZ 82?

    Hi all:

I've been looking to buy a CZ82 to replace the CZ82 I had a few years ago and had to sell off in the divorce process. The one I had was rather mint, I had to hunt long and hard to find it back in 2014 with almost no wear and I liked it, even carried it for a few years.

Almost every CZ82 I can find lately, even one that has a good price at my LGS, has either a lot of holster wear or one or both sides of slide have major paint chips. These guns were originally painted, not blued so it's common. I realize that by painting it, I will negate any collector value and that's okay, I'd rather do that than shoot a really ratty looking pistol. CZ82 isn't exactly a vintage rare pistol, even though it's cool and a C&R.

I don't think Cerakote will look right. Are there any other paints or processes that would come anywhere closer to resembling the original paint job on these? It's either a semi-gloss or gloss paint used originally. I don't know my gun paints very well, I've heard of Cerakote, Durakote, BBQ paint, etc.

Suggestions? Or should I just cave and have it Cerakoted? Or just get primitive and rattle can it myself?

If not Ceracoat, look at the finish done at Arizona Response Systems. Their semi gloss black looks good and is durable. I had a fal rifle done in 2000, very happy.

I think it is called Metacol...its been a while.

Brownells Aluma-Hyde is available in semi gloss black, I was considering it for a project but never tested it.

Not a bad idea. I've parked a few AK builds, I like the no fuss, no muss thing with parked guns, it is a good finish.

I don't want to speak for AR15Barrels, but last time I was out there, he had a park tank and the park came out great. Perfect finish.

Those grips on my Tokarev above came from Hungary, www.marschalgrips.com They make tons of options for the CZ 82. Just be ready to wait quite a few months as they have been backlogged.

There are also these KSD grips on Amazon, available immediately and they look decent too. https://www.amazon.com/KSD-Compatibl...s%2C124&sr=8-1

I would leave it... its part of the guns story.

otherwise if you are going to "go for it" go all the way, make it a utility gun and parkarize it.

I am mostly a purist when it comes to C&Rs, I don't Bubba my guns and honestly tend to look down on those who do from a historical POV. The Tokarev above, I have the original grips still but it was already butchered by adding a non-original, terrible safety that actually impedes the gun from functioning. So the grips cover the holes on either side of the frame.

The CZ 82 isn't rare, obscure and 98% of them have chipped up paint. My first choice would be to find one with the paint in decent shape, the one I used to have was a unicorn, it had no chips or holster wear but I've noticed that in 2023, those seem to be impossible to find, every CZ 82 I've looked at over the past year or so that was for sale was pretty dinged and chipped. If that's all I can find, a beat up copy with a lot of paint flaking off, I may paint it or parkerize it because having the original paint chipping away off the frame and slide just looks ratty to me. I'd never re-paint or park a gun that has just genuine holster wear and character but I think it bugs me because the paint was crappy to begin with and it just flakes off on many of them, not really from hard use and wear, just because it's a crappy paint job and it makes the gun look like it was dug out of the ground.

We shall see, I am still looking for a clean one to buy, I'd rather not have to paint it or park it.

I'm a C&R purist too, but that crappy "safety" that was required to import Tokarev's is the ultimate "Bubba job" to me ! Drilling a hole in the frame for something that works some of the time is blasphemy !
You did a great job finding a grip that covers up that "Bubba job" ! I would consider getting one on my Romanian, but am hesitant sending money to an Eastern European country that is run by a Putin approved dictator.

Yeah, that pisses me off that stupid AFT boys needlessly MADE the importers butcher those nice pistols by putting a lame a s s, useless safety on them but thems the breaks.
Federal Import and 922r laws are the definition of arbitrary and capricious, maybe we can get them stuck down under Bruen/NYSRPA eventually?

Marschal Grips have been good to go for many years, the guy is honest and does great work, I would have no qualms about ordering from him again. You just need the patience
of Job. Website says current wait is 10-14 weeks, it's improved, I had to wait six months ordering them late last Summer. He does have some overrun and already made grips where
the customers flaked, you can get those in just a couple of weeks, if he has something that you want?

                              Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.
