Either as a function of law or function of "It's different and I don't understand it so my answer is 'no'" from the LGS folks.

Condition is important to me, so on line isn't my 1st choice of doing C&R buys.

    Yes you can have 2 C&R 03 FFL's; 1 in California and 1 in a different state.

^Within 30 days of taking possession of the C&R long gun, you are required to report the transfer to CA DOJ BOF, this can be done by submitting a completed Collector's Report of Instate Acquisition of Curio or Relic Long Gun (BOF 961) or by accessing CFARS and submitting an online Collector In-State Acquisition of Curio or Relic Long Gun Report.

If the C&R firearms is a C&R handgun, then it must be transferred through a CA FFL dealer. [PC 27545]
^Since you have a valid C&R 03-FFL and valid COE, you will be exempt from the 10 day wait, the 1 in 30 day wait, and the FSC requirement; when the CA FFL dealer transfers the C&R handgun to you.
      Quiet,

This was very helpful, and I appreciate you being a solid CalGunner contributor. As a FFL03/COE holder, many thanks for the sound and referenced guidance.

        Point of clarification.

What I posted earlier only applies if the C&R firearm is already located within CA.

Because of CA laws being changed effective 01-01-2015, if the C&R firearm is located outside of CA.

The C&R firearm must be transferred through a CA FFL dealer. [PC 27585(a)]
^A person with a valid C&R 03-FFL and valid COE, will be exempt from the 10 day wait, the 1 in 30 day wait, and the FSC requirement for this C&R firearm transfer.

A CA resident with a valid C&R 03-FFL is exempt from this requirement, as long as they travel out of state to physically acquire the C&R firearm, then bring that C&R firearm back to CA and, within 5 days of returning to CA, report that C&R firearm importation to CA DOJ BOF via submission of a completed Curio or Relic Firearm Report (BOF 4100A) or CFARS online submission of a Curio or Relic Firearm Report. [PC 27585(b)(1) and 27565]

These changes to CA laws, made it so that starting 01-01-2015, it is no longer CA legal for someone out-of-state to ship a C&R long gun directly to a person with a C&R 03-FFL located in CA.
