If really SHTF, NOTHING will be legal, and legality will not matter. Anything goes in SHTF. I'm guessing at a minimun there will be martial law, curfew, stay at home orders, extreme surveillance, concentration camps, checkpoints, no water, no power, no food, chaos, looting, fires, etc...

C&R = 1970 and older.

When one says "no modern guns" that's somewhat of a misnomer, because many guns designed or build since about 1910 still falls into a category of those guns still being produced today.

Any number of revolvers, even magnums (the S&W .357 Magnum 1935), and when you consider the Hi-Power (1935) was only discontinued just last year, and the 1911 (because 1911) and its clones are still in production, not to mentioned many different lever-actions since 1873 and so on, there are plenty of options that are modern, that aren't modern. The SIG P210 is essentially a 1949 design. The "modern" semi-auto Browning BAR in numerous calibers (not THE CAR) got it's start in 1967.

It doesn't have to be a cosmoline caked and pantina'ed military surplus, or of flint/match lock antiquity to fit this purpose.

So much to choose from pre-1970, whereby when I got some of those things back in the 1980s, they still seemed like new guns to me. (i.e., imagine yourself buying a year 2000 to 2010 production gun now - would you call it an "old gun".)

My Inglis Hi-power was still being used in Canada as of this year. It is very reliable and I have plenty of Hi-Cap mags from 20 years ago. I even have a shoulder stock holster that I never attach, but in the SHTF times I can attach it and I have a short carbine.

SHTF - a very sad state of affairs, I was in a couple of places that had civil wars* and it is not anything any sane person would want a part of.


Reality - 2" .357 in absolutely hidden-holster, no permit, no warning - will surprise you and then make a Jackson Pollock out of you.
I practice with the .357 and am used to it, and the way it shoots, it's the same age as me, so we're both a years or so away from being curio and relics.

*A WW2 battle rifle strapped to an overweight middle aged Calguns addict would last about .13 seconds in any real conflict, as a trained solider (without an old gun fetish) looking for armed combatants clocks you waddling towards the 7-11 to refill your slurpee and red-mists your medulla oblongata from 1.5 KM away.
That's how it works, in my limited experience.

SKS or M1 carbine for close engagements. Out of all my rifles, I think I prefer one of my Swede Mausers for anything at distance.

With an M1 carbine and an M1 rifle you have everything you need to go fast and furious or hot and heavy.

1969 SKS and 1957 GCNM 1911, until I could " liberate" something with a higher rate of fire. LOL

M1 Garand, because it's semi-automatic, strongly built, and fires a cartridge that will stop an assailant cold. Clips are compact and you can carry plenty with you to keep the rifle fed. "The .30-06 is never a mistake."

After that, a Mosin, especially a Finnish Mosin, or a British Enfield for its slick, fast operation.

Is it really a discussion if it makes no sense at all. SHTF means instant compliance with unconstitutional laws? I must have read the wrong memo. SHTF means BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY.
