        Groverdunerider,

There is no way to make black powder non-corrosive. It is carbon, sulfur and potassium nitrate. The last ingredient is what gets you.

Everyone on Calguns keeps talking about TDS. I never knew we had so many fish keepers!

The TDS on my 10gallon tanks 110ppm
The TDS on my 29 gallon tank is 150ppm (due to substrate)

The gun shop in SLO is wrong. Never shop where oblivious people answer questions. triple seven works fine. I use it in my inline ML 50 cal Thompson

Can you cite the code for this?

I have seen the 5lbs code somewhere, its been posted here before. But no matter, fire Marshall for Santa Barbara county says 5lbs. so for me that is max, for others ? I don't know.

Call your local fire marshall. He'll tell you how much HE'LL allow you to have on hand. As for making your own--only if you have a death wish.

This will sound naive but why not just use BP substitute? Does real BP make more smoke or something? My local reloading supply always has all of the substitutes in stock.

Yes it makes more smoke and smells unique.
For me it is just for the authenticity. What is the point of shooting BP guns with something other than real BP? The smoke and smell (and ridiculous amounts of cleaning) is all part of the experience.

From what I understand, stored properly, real black powder will last FAR longer than any of the substitutes. It's shelf life is measured in decades, not months. I only use black so I dont know if this is really true, but I am using powder that is over thirty or forty years old and I can still win a turkey or 3 at Thanksgiving with it. I do know that Pyrodex will rust up just like black so no real big advantage there.
As far as making it goes, don't know about the legality but I know of a few that have attempted it, and the quality is way down from what you can buy.
Get acquainted with a local BP or muzzle loading club and you will soon be swimming in it.

The fake bp is harder to ignite. My experience with triple 7 in a front loader was disappointing to say the least and I never was a fan of Pyrodex.
