So, Will We See CMP Selling 1911s?

Just came across this article while browsing Reddit:

Earlier this evening President Obama signed the 2016 National Defense Authorization Act. Among the myriad provisions in the bill is a portion authorizing the transfer of 100,000 surplus 1911 pistols to the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) for sale to qualified U.S. citizens. The NDAA is required every year as part of the budgeting and allocation …

I know that things have gone back and forth on whether or not the CMP will be allowed to sell surplus 1911s. But with the signing of the NDAA, are we going one step in the right direction finally?

Look for them in a year or two, will likely be a 2 year waiting list, and there will be no "deals"
They are only getting 10,000 per year for 10 years.

What would you consider a deal? I'm thinking they will be somewhere in the 400-700 range for the low to average guns and then maybe 1000 for the nicest (unless those go straight to auction)?
Everyone on Calguns keeps talking about TDS. I never knew we had so many fish keepers!

The TDS on my 10gallon tanks 110ppm
The TDS on my 29 gallon tank is 150ppm (due to substrate)

Do you need to register with the CMP before purchase or just send in the paperwork with your order?

Usually with any kind of flash ordering situation where there might be shortages you have an account ready, your paperwork all ready to go, in the express mail envelope unsealed so you can add whatever the part numbers end up being. Then when the word comes down you fill it out and mail it that day.

You want everything to sail through so you have an account already, keep your club membership up to date but include a xerox of your card in the packet just in case, everything you can think of to make it go through smoothly.

So if you're serious about wanting a CMP 1911 I'd buy a Garand from them, ideally now (they have been known to do price increases on the first of the year) and you'll be good for three years. After that you'll need a notary to notarize one of the signatures again.

Eljay, I wish I had to coin to buy a precursory Garand to welcome my 1911 home.

It is premature to be thinking about buying a 1911 from the CMP. But, it is exactly the right time to buy a M1 Garand from the CMP, as they are going to be out of them soon. Don't start making plans for your 1911 from the CMP yet. Even if Obama doesn't stop it with a phone call to the Army, I predict that it will take more than one year and less than three years (unless Hillary wins) for this to become real.

                    Howcome?

Congress can't order the Army to do stuff. Only the President can do that. As I recall, the legislation in question said something like "The Secretary of the Army may give the 1911s to the CMP, and the CMP has to get an FFL." I'm not at all an expert in this stuff, but just because Congress has authorized it, doesn't mean that the Secretary of the Army is going to do it, especially if he gets a phone call from a guy who can dismiss him who asks him not to. This thing isn't important enough to Obama for him to put any time into killing it while he is worried about his climate change legacy, but if all he needs to do is make a phone call to kill it, he might. An incoming Republican President could make the same phone call, and see the pistols delivered. Or, maybe the Congressmen that represent the districts that the CMP facilities are in will cut a deal and convince Obama to let it go through.

Good point. It does seem as if they are getting to the bottom of the barrel on those Garands.

From a CMP email that just came out:

                        An update on the 1911's

The NDAA 2016 has passed. We have no further information concerning the status of the 1911s. We will update our customers as we know more. Please do not email or call with questions regarding the 1911s. Our systems are overloaded.

Thank you, Mark Johnson, Chief Operating Officer

Right. Just received the same CMP e-mail. So it will probably be a long wait, so will not worry about it for awhile.

I purchased two Garands from CMP back in 2013, so I would have to go through the notary process again next year, but all my requirements are up to date otherwise; I won't be caught ineligible when CMP does start selling these 1911s, regardless how far out they may be!
