Finally got myself an M1 Garand

So today I made a pretty decent deal with a Calguns member on a 1942 Springfield M1 Garand. Its in great condition and I plan on keeping it that way. It looks like it has not been fired in a very long time and had some dust in the receiver. It definitely going to need some cleaning. Any recommendations on some good grease for lubrication? Any other pointers for a new M1 Garand owner?

      RIG or Lube-R-Plate(sp) grease
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

ANY quality grease is overkill for a semi auto Garand. Go to auto parts store and buy a tube of wheel bearing grease which is more than adequate and will last you a lifetime. Absolutly no sense in buying small expensive tubes of so called high tech gun grease

This is correct. I use a little tub of wheel bearing grease which will last me the rest of my life and only cost a few dollars.

And that's a very nice looking garand OP. Are you gonna shoot it or just make it a safe queen?
              Sorry, not sorry.

Congrats, the M1 is a great rifle and fun to shoot! For grease I use Mobil 1 synthetic, it works great.

A few things you'll want to get are a gas cylinder wrench (I got the mine from Garand Gear), some Garand safe ammo and enbloc clips. For cleaning I got an M1 Buddy from Brownells, it's a plastic piece that fits in the receiver and keeps the solvent out of the action while cleaning. I also picked up a Pro Shot bore guide to protect the muzzle while cleaning. One other thing I picked up from Garand Gear is an op rod handle protector so it won't damage other guns in the safe when pulling it out - it's worth the $2 to save a nasty scratch on the other rifles.

The one peace of mind part that is on my Garand is the ported gas plug from Garand Gear. It will safely allow you to shoot commercial loads through your gun without fear you are going to bend the op-rod. There was a while there where M2 ball and Garand specific ammo was hard to come by and I didn't worry about shooting whatever I could find.

White lithium grease like Lubereplate has always worked for me. A few of my friends have used frog lube on their garands. Have fun!!

You should clean the rifle upside down so solevant etc doesnt leak into gas cylinder so the M1 Buddy isnt needed, JMO

All the above is good stuff..... go to the CMP website for a lot of good info. Be careful of the ammo you shoot... would hate to bend the Op rod.
After your 1st good cleaning don't keep taking it apart, there is no need. just keep the barrel and chamber clean.
Then come out to a GSM match and see what you can do with it.

Beautiful M1. Congrats you will love it.

I replaced the springs in my M1s with stainless steel versions as the old ones were getting weak. I think I got them from Orion 7.

Hey guys, thanks for all the info. Lots of information. I'm definitely going to shoot it so I will be sure to get some 30-06 friendly ammo. I will probably pick up some mobile 1 synthetic grease, sounds much more economical. I will also look into the ported gas plug. Thanks again, guys
