I'm not on a SWAT team, but I have been trained as an Infantryman. I've been trained during SDM training to hold the weapon by the magwell when prone and kneeling to avoid interference on the barrel and changing POI thanks to the M4/M16 barrel not being free floated.
However, I've also been taught by the same NCOs who taught me to hit targets 550m out with an M4 to control the rifle while shooting from a standing position by holding my arm out extended as far out front as I can get on the weapon. Wasn't taught by Chris Costa, but it works so that's probably why Costa teaches it to people in his classes. People can think it looks silly or that I do it just because the guys in the Magpul videos do, but from my experiences using it I have much more control of my weapon - which for me in my field as an Infantryman really could be the difference between life or death. I'll stick with what works for me regardless if it looks unorthodox.
