                Magpul!

Really there's some logic behind it, but lots of people do it because that's what they were taught in a tac class

this topic has beaten to death. but i guess whatever works for ya. but having a thumb over bore technique makes me more efficient and accurate with my rifle. I have a better control and better weapon manipulation. if it makes me better why would i be ashamed to be a called a fanboy?

                    let's have a game.
Exercise 1: i want you to grab a pen and hold it in the middle. then start writing small letters and capital letters. then tell me if you have a good control of the pen while writing.

Exercise 2: hold the pen near the tip and and starts writing small letters and capital letters and tell me if you have good control of the pen and more precise writing those letters.

It's an analogy but pretty much applicable with the rifle since they are both extension of our hands. Using the thumb over technique will have you hold near the tip of the barrel thus you will have better control of the recoil/muzzle rise compared to holding the mag or any other technique.

Try it next time you shoot your gun. You will thank me later.

I was poking around old threads and saw this and had to laugh. The stuff we have gotten stuffed up our collective tookus' here in Libra-Fornia.

Mine was a somewhat sorrowful chuckle, BTW.
                        Got it LDH?

If you think about it, just purely due to leverage, you're in a better position to control any force on the weapon by having your hand as far out as possible.

Some people make fun of it and say it's the "tacticool" way. Then those same people hold the gun at the magwell, like they're on a swat team with an MP5 or something.
