Would you trust your life with a 9" Pistol Upper in a gunfight

To the OP, I had the exact same question and researched it myself. There are many other that pointed to the effectiveness of the M193 round which it need at least 2700 fps for fragmentation. With a 7" barrel, the bullet leaves around that velocity (probably 2600 fps), so fragmentation is unlikely to occur, unless you are point blank.
However, even though other would choose a high pistol caliber like .357, in the case you are going up against IIIA soft armor, all pistol rounds are going to be stopped. But a 5.56 going 2000+ fps, should still penetrate all soft armor. So that is the advantage.
I found that on a 5.56 round every inch you take off from a barrel reduce the muzzle velocity about 100fps. However, for some reason the AK47 round (7.62x39mm) doesn't drop that significantly. But I know you are just asking about the M193, so I won't go off topic.
I would like to know what your other choice is? Are you contemplating between a 9mm pistol caliber? Maybe you have a MP5 clone and you are asking this question to see which is go to gun if something goes bump in the night?Comment

before anything gets checked off for shtf/trust your life
you must run a ton of ammo through it, all types too because you never know what will be available ive had some rounds keyhole on rifle barrels before but it was super cheap crap ive never found again
now I try to stick with brands I can pick up locally to at least test with
and if you do place large orders online make sure it can work with that before buying
also see how accurate those rounds are at multiple distances
I only worry about man size targets if it hits its fine with me
were not doing any sniping with these pistols
also make sure you run it hard, I want parts to break now not when your depending on it
and really pay close attention to any wear inside maybe even take photos
will tell you if something has changed over time
and my most biggest thing, they are immaculately clean and oiled at all times
figure if my life depends on it might as well have it clean before it sees heavy usesigpicComment

Those are...~15 inch barrels? Did the Rangers not have any issues with their M16s?
This seems to be a projectile issue rather than a rifle issue: pick a bullet that expands/frags at the velocities that will be seen, otherwise you may have problems. Since joe civilian is not constrained by Hague, there are lots of commercial designs to choose from. It's just a question of choosing one that works.
