    recommendations for a rifle

Looking for advice on getting a rifle. I would like to buy one completely set up already. Also needs to be one rifle. I know it would probably make more sense to get a couple different rifles to take advantage of their strengths ... but I"m limited by the wife.

I currently have a WC 1911 45 and a remington 870. I would like to add a rifle to my mix.

The parameters are the following :
Home Defense (ease of use, stopping power, reliability)
Hunting (nothing long distance 300 yards +)
Limited recoil (not looking for 458 socom. 308 etc)

Price for the whole setup (rifle, sights, case, etc) needs to be under 4k.

Could all of you experienced rifle owners give your top three choices?

The various platforms out there make this so confusing(bullpups, scar, ar's (gas piston, DI, 300 blackout, 6.8SPC etc)

Help please! Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

You have a lot of options with that price range.

If you really aren't sure on which way to go, I would try to go to a range day with some local Calgunners and see if you can try a few things before you buy.

Rifles are like any other tool, no matter how good it is in one area it can't be perfect in all (Scar comes closet though )

Basic AR15 following the Kiss Princible.

Then get a bolt action .308 a Savage 11 or a TC Dimension would work

A AR15 and a defent bolt action could be had for about $1500.

do not want a 5.56 caliber since it would limit the hunting parameter.

            Why?

What do you plan to hunt?

Deer and hog ... would be nice if I could also do some larger game but most likely an 6.8 or blackout wouldnt cut it.

Get the AR platform and then buy another upper with a different caliber. 6.5 or 6.8?

since you need it for hunting a 556 ar15 is out of the question.

if you dont plan to use it for plinking i would build it in 6.8spc. ammo is more expensive but if your not shooting all the time you dont need a huge stock. and DI(standard gas system)

this is assumed you want a semi auto.

if not i would next recommend a lever action in something like 30-30. good deer rifle under 300.

Been thinking of going this route. I can always buy another upper later and it won't be considered another rifle. : )

If I do go this direction then the follow on questions would be :
                          DI or Piston
                          Which manufacturer/model
                          Which barrel length

Definitely semi-auto ... not interested in a bolt action.

Not concerned about the ammo prices.

BTW I'm left handed ... I don't think I need to get a left handed AR though just need to make sure has a case deflector.

At the same time some of the other newer platforms also can do barrel swaps to change caliber.

Since you have a 1911 and a shotgun, I think adding a rifle that is somewhat designed for HD kind of complicates your purchase.

The 1911 & 12 gauge can handle that stuff, if you let that aspect go you are now free to concentrate on getting a good hunting rifle that is not hard to shoot. Just about any rifle would be easier to shoot that a 12 gauge you already own, if you will.

Personally, I like 308 for lots of reason, availability, NATO, reloading et. Any good rifle can be used in a HD when you need to protect your home from a distance, like if you own a larger property or the threat is leaving your home with a loved one and you can still save that persons life with a shot that would require accuracy and adequate power.

Although the particular rifle you could get is long and distinguished. Two that come to mind are a M1 Garand or a Lever Action 308 such as ones made by Browning. A really good scope would be in order as well, such as a Leopold VRX III 3 x9. The good news is you do all of this for under $2,000 or go up to $4,000 if you'd like. The AR platform is more taticool than anything else, you get into bullet bottons and other crap you don't need to deal with. Good luck.
