In all honesty, it's just another way to protect the rail/handgaurd. Just like the ladder covers...

Actually it all started because he lost the mounting screws.
Next thing you know some operators at the range were coping him.
Before long you couldn't operate without them.

Protect it from what? There's no coverage to protect anything. Also, most rail covers are used to keep your hand from feeling like you've been hanging onto a cheesegrater(or in some cases keep it from directly contacting the metal closest to the gas block depending on your rifle configuration). The handguard pictured is going to get just as beat to hell with that cord run though it, as it would have without it(pending actual use).

I guess if you don't have a carpet to drop the rifle on, this might help protect your hard wood flooring while you're doing tactical ninja rolls behind the couch?

Yes, a simple band is all it takes to keep a sling against a rifle if it's stowed in a rack, so the sling isn't just flopping around. Not this laced through the handguard crap. Easily pops off and you have a usable sling, rather than screwing around with a sling that's been rigged up like it's going to be used in a parade on a drill rifle.

Wouldn't the shock cord melt from the barrel heat? Well, I guess they don't go full auto.

I think the LVOA is a pretty nice rifle and the parachord is supposed to improve grip during wet application. Cant wait to try mine out.

Not that I train in wet applications or anything but my hands sweat like a mofo and i hate wearing gloves.

I heard some guy that calls himself "Voodoo" does that to his AR's in case he needs to go mountain climbing in a high speed tactical training course or rock climbing wall at the mall.

                              Seems legit.

From what? Dropping it on the carpet?

I bet these guys all have giant 4x4's without a scratch or drop of mud on them too.
