What are your thoughts on Zeroing your Red Dot at 10-yards

My AR-15 was built with personal defense in mind. However, it is not my primary go-to firearm for home protection. I recently zeroed my irons and optics (lower third) at 25-yards.

I have a friend who goes about it in slightly different way. He zeros his irons at 25-yards and zeros his Red Dot at 10-yards for home protection. It kinda makes sense to me to have your Red Dot setup for close quarters use. He still has his irons zeroed at 25-yards for anything that would require a longer distance shot.

So I'd like to get some feedback from others about the pros and cons to this method.

If you are shooting something within 10 yards don't you just point the muzzle in their direction?

I zero'd my red dot for 25 yards. I've shot it 7-10 yards and if I remember correctly, would only shoot 2-3 inches off point of aim. I think in a self defense scenario, this would be negligible and would be sufficient and acceptable for me.

Ar sight height is 2.6" above bore centerline. With 50 yard zero, you are also zeroed @ 200yards, more or less. That makes max pbr something like 250-300 yards depending on load (you are +/- 2.6" from poa). That's good enough for combat. Or you can zero @100, and it will always be a bit low.

Zeroing @ 10 yards is ridiculous unless you are shooting 1/4" bullseyes @ a fixed 10 yard range.

Zero at 25 yards. At point blank, the round will be 2.6" low like sunborder mentioned. At 25 yds it will be poa/poi. around 100-150yds the projectile will peak about 3" above poa and start the downward curve. at 225yds, the poa/poi will cross again. by 300 yds, you will be about 4" below poa.

cliff notes- zero at 25 and you will hit center mass anywhere within 3 feet to 300 yards.

My version is to zero at 100 like always, it's the rifleman in me. Shooting at close quarters is easy. For every rifle, I know the distance from center of bore to the reticle. So in the confines of home, I just aim that much higher. Sometimes the range near me allows "sighting in" AR's on the pistol line. I like setting up a torso on the 10 to simulate HD.

In the home is EMT- eyes muzzle target

A quick flash sight picture or from low ready, start shooting at the pelvis or thighs and work your way up and they come down.

10 yards seems awfully close. I'd rather have a 25 or 50 yard zero (I personally use 50), in a home defense scenario hitting a couple inches low (at most) is unlikely to matter. If you're zerod at 10 and have to shoot at 50 you'll be a lot farther off (I'll make a wild guess of 9").

Mine is zero'd at 50 although Cuda does make a good argument to go at 25...

At 10, just point and make it go boom.

I zero at 100 yards. Anything below that, if I can't hit the target I shouldn't have a gun.

My home defense AR has a 50 yard zero with an Eotech. At 7 yards, the bottom tip of the Eotech reticle is where POI is. For CQB, nothing beats an Eotech IMO.
