When you complete an 80% lower you need to put your own SN on it as you are then considered to be a manufacturer. You can use whatever you want for an SN, could be "Mickey Mouse 001" or just 001 etc.

Not unless you're planning on transferring it at some point, although it never hurts to put a serial # on there so that a LEO will have something to type into a database, or so you'll have something to put on the form if registration happens. A location doesn't hurt, either. But neither's required at this point if you just plan on keeping it.

Oh, and to answer OP's question, never had a range employee do anything other than eye the bullet button but I've had people ask what brand my AR is, usually in a puzzled tone of voice. It's kind of cobbled together...

incorrect. there is no CA nor federal requirement that you serialize a home-built firearm that isn't an NFA gun. ATF now says that you are supposed to mark when you sell but the USC they refer to doesn't seem to apply to non-licensees.

I got harrassed by a fellow shooter, and he brought one of the range masters over back in 09' @ Cupertino rod n gun.

He asked how come you can detach your magazine? I said I have to use a tool it's a mag lock! He replied I have to take my AR in half to feed my rounds in my mag. Then he asked how come you have high capacity magazines? I replied its a 10/30 magpul pmag, then I even let the range master load my mags and they hold 10.

Funny thing is he tried using a bullet to drop his mag and it did drop. D'head never apologized neither.

Tkm, I know it's wrong. I knew it was incorrect 25 years ago when I served. Fact is, lots and lots of people including the military use them interchangeably. I guess I'm just not bothered by it cause I really don't care. I'm certainly not going to try to school some old timer for his mistake.

Same goes for the pistol/revolver verbiage debate. I don't care.

I ask people with cool guns about them and get asked about mines. I have never been ran down by someone asking "is that legal!". I have said and have been told that your weapon is to cool to be legal in Kali.

I havent heard anyone in the Marine Corps refer to 9mm mags as Clips, its a magazine weither it goes in a rifle or a pistol. now Stripper clips are a different story, maybe times have changed since you were in LOL

Nope, no need to mark it. Only needed if you intend to transfer

Never been hassled about any of my guns because I shoot out in the middle of BFE and I never see anyone.

Actually that's not 100% true. One time a guy rolled over this hill behind me in his 4x4 jeep, catching me by surprise, and pulled up to my shooting position. He had an LEO cut about him and he gets out of his jeep and asks me what I'm shooting. I show him my WWII Garand and next thing you know he pulls a remington 700 with a bipod out of the back of his trunk and we go to town on the steel plates I had down range. Turned out he was a master Bradley tank crew trainer in the army, and also one heck of a shot.

Never "interrogated", but an RO politely asked if my SCAR 16 used standard AR mags. The rifle is configured feature-less and I was using pre-ban mags. He just wanted to make sure that everything was on the up and up.

Anyone ever been questioned on you AR configuration at the range? Example. Why doesn't your lower have a serial # or a brand name? Why are you using thirty round mags ( if your featureless).

The range I attend has never asked me any questions on my AR's including the fact they're not featureless in any way. I just keep the BB on them and mind my own business. Even if they did I have no problem letting them look at it. I never use any mag that's over ten rounds and only load 5 rounds at a time anyway.

Never had a problem with anybody asking about my lowers and high cap mags.Maybe saying they are gealous ,most of mine are RAW weapons.They then say that they should have bought there guns years earlier.
