I've been extremely happy with my PSOP 2.5-5x24 with independent focus. Sight picture is sharp when you adjust the focus, and the illumination is pretty useful for shooting at dark colored targets. I got it sighted in very easily and it seems extremely sturdy and high quality.

I prefer the $1199 one. The barrel is fluted and its featureless. The only turn off they are single stack mags and the mags are pricey. and no last round hold open. I already have a PSL with 12 mags and have been debating to get the Vepr for better quality and accuracy or upgrade the PSL with Teludyne barrel system.

I have been eyeballing this one with fluted barrel $1199

                      VS.

                      $599 upgrade.

As I said, rifle still hasn't shipped. :/

As I said, i ordered the 4-10x42mm VariPOSP, with independent focus. I had a chance to play with the scope last night, and i found the glass to be very clear. I haven't used high end optics, but there was very little fuzziness on the edges at 10x. Seemed pretty good for whats to be a rugged optic for eastern bloc soldiers

The independent focus lets you get the reticle really sharp, but I imagine the regular version wouldn't be too far off. My only issue with it is that the whole rear portion turns when you use the focus. So if you have the eye piece, or a lens cap attached to the eye piece, that will rotate as well.

Illumination works really well for low light / night time in an urban setting, where you have street lighting, but cannot see the unlit reticle. The VariPOSP illumination has like 7 illumination settings, selected by a rotary dial in place of the regular flip switch. There is a place for a spare bulb to be screwed in on the scope mount, which is a nice touch. Wish there was somewhere for spare batteries, but I guess those would go in the butt stock.

Construction seems very durable. I cannot wait to test this scope out on the rifle.

Mine came with the side-mount weaver rail to let you mount extra accessories. For anyone who was curious, this rail is basically mounted using a clamp ring around the rear of the scope, and can be adjusted for various positions. I will post pictures of this over the weekend.

As far as Kalinka, I found them very reliable. My scope arrived in 3 days. Was well packaged. And when there was an issue (the spare green bulb that the VariPOSP comes with was missing) they mailed one right away. Hope this helps as far as scopes. I will make sure to post pictures of the rifle and range report once I have it.

This was the ideal gun with power, cheap ammo and extreme reliability until I found out it was a single stack magazine. It's still a desirable gun but the mag issue is significant.

I wonder how the trigger will be on the featureless one. If it is the same as the standard saiga I will be very disappointed.

For those interested in the featureless VEPR hunter from atlantic, there is also this one in .308 http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/storeproduct1107.aspx .They have 20 round mags for it here: http://stores.csspecs.com/-strse-17/...und/Detail.bok

Only thing is then you don't have the cheap ammo available.

Edit: Found this on ar15.com http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_4_64/14...ew_VEPR_s.html
looks like its a separate trigger module. Interesting.

thank you for the heads up, this is exactly what I end up with also.
8x42 is not bad but it is just not as versatile.
