As I said, i ordered the 4-10x42mm VariPOSP, with independent focus. I had a chance to play with the scope last night, and i found the glass to be very clear. I haven't used high end optics, but there was very little fuzziness on the edges at 10x. Seemed pretty good for whats to be a rugged optic for eastern bloc soldiers

The independent focus lets you get the reticle really sharp, but I imagine the regular version wouldn't be too far off. My only issue with it is that the whole rear portion turns when you use the focus. So if you have the eye piece, or a lens cap attached to the eye piece, that will rotate as well.

Illumination works really well for low light / night time in an urban setting, where you have street lighting, but cannot see the unlit reticle. The VariPOSP illumination has like 7 illumination settings, selected by a rotary dial in place of the regular flip switch. There is a place for a spare bulb to be screwed in on the scope mount, which is a nice touch. Wish there was somewhere for spare batteries, but I guess those would go in the butt stock.

Construction seems very durable. I cannot wait to test this scope out on the rifle.

Mine came with the side-mount weaver rail to let you mount extra accessories. For anyone who was curious, this rail is basically mounted using a clamp ring around the rear of the scope, and can be adjusted for various positions. I will post pictures of this over the weekend.

As far as Kalinka, I found them very reliable. My scope arrived in 3 days. Was well packaged. And when there was an issue (the spare green bulb that the VariPOSP comes with was missing) they mailed one right away. Hope this helps as far as scopes. I will make sure to post pictures of the rifle and range report once I have it.
congrats, very good scope, POSP are made for civilians and they are cheaper then military PSO scopes ,I have both , PSO a little bit better quality.

8x42 is not bad but it is just not as versatile.
I have 8X42D on my PSL,3000/4000 rounds, never lost a zero

I actually really like the way the rifle stock model looks. Like a M14 joined in an unholy union with the AK

You are right PSL light ball only, First thing I did after purchasing VeprX54,talcked to the Molot chief engineer and he send me an official letter that you can use all hunting rounds with the VeprX54 rifle ,because its a short stroke bolt won't hit rear trunnion as hard as long stroke PSL,plus Vepr has RPK heavy reciver

BTW I am happy with light ball ammo,

Small correction. Both use long stroke gas operated system. However pal has a lengthen receiver and gas system maybe bigger ports too that causes problems with higher pressure (heavy ball ammo). The vepr uses a heavy role receiver with clever ejection port to avoid lengthening the system. It is still a long stroke gas piston but the components are lighter than in pal. At least that's what I have gathered from pictures.

Is there a reason why it being single stack causes it to be a "mag issue"? Are single stack less reliable then double stack or is there any performance issues?

I'm thinking it was a Russian way of sporterizing their AK rifles to look less threatening and more inline with a hunting rifle to increase imports into the country. YOu know how politicians are with their their evil black rifles so the Russians went with non threatening wood furniture and 5 round magazines to start. We'll have to see what gets offered aftermarket.
