Is the Mini 30 ok for SHTF scenario?

Ive been wondering, since I see a couple of dissatisfied Mini 30 users on this and a couple other forums, if the Mini 30 is an acceptable platform for a SHTF situation? I would like to think that it is, barring an all out war on our streets, but Id like feedback from fellow Cal Gunners. Im still looking for a good scope to mount, and was probably gonna change it out from the wood stock into a Hogue stock, and Ive got 6 10 rd mags.

    What do you guys think?

In that round, I would go the saiga route personally. Very reliable, simple, and cheaper. If S really did HTF, It would be much easier to find parts for compared to a mini 30.

But if your stuck on the Mini 30, they shoot nice, they go bang everytime I messed with one, but I wasnt super impressed.

Just dont expect much with 7.62x39 for long range accuracy.

I know that MINE would be great. I have read of many people having issues with their 30s but the only time mine ever failed was when the firing pin hole was too gummed up with the nasty primer sealant and that was after like 2K rounds with no cleaning, lube, etc.

Since you already have it, it will do fine as long as it works with all types of ammo. If heard that the mini 30 has a problem with hard primers. But there is a fix for it.

But if was looking for a gun in that caliber, the mini would be toward the end of the list.

Well, so far, my Mini has had no issues, only one misfire when I used Wolf ammo about 2 years ago. Other than that, its been great!

And Im lookin for accuracy out to 100-150 yds, so I dont think thats imossible with a good optic, is it?

If it were SHTF I would rather evade then shoot at 100+ yards.

Plus you should be able to hit a man sized target at triple that distance with iron sights. If not then I would get more ammo and practice and not a scope.

Also have you tried to use a scope to hit targets at 20 yards or so on the move? If not then let me tell you it is not fun.

                Ruger Rick,

I think the mini 30would make an excellent SHTF rifle! I admit though that if and when the SHTF senarion arrives... any rifle in your hand is a comfort. Just stock up on ammo and spare mags.

Since there are so many different possible SHTF scenarios, it's hard to get the one rifle to fit all the possibilities. Just plan for what you feel is most likely.

The nice thing about the Rugers are they are very light and short. Some of the Saigas are pretty heavy in comparison.

Is it chrome plated with a folding stock?

I think an AK converted Saiga would be more reliable, easier to find magazines and cooler but a mini would still be ok.

If you were going to buy new, I would say Saiga. But then I think 5.45*39 might be something to consider or even a 5.56*45 Saiga.

Last first, the x39 can work pretty well out to 3-400 yds.

                      I LOVE my mini-14's.
They compliment my AR's quite well ammo wise.

That said, I use Saigas or SKS's for x39.
                      YMMV

if thats what you got it would work just fine. if SHTF a gun and alot of ammo is better than no gun.
the good thing is the ammo is cheap for it too.

Thanks a whole lot for your opinions and insight, fellas!

I am not a prepper by any means, but I am starting to wonder if maybe the fabric of our society is wearing thinner and thinner as time passes. So Id like to be prepared with the best tools possible to be able to protect my family and our homestead. Living in L.A. i know itll be kinda hard, but I suppose my Mini 30 will give me a nice boost in morale and confidence if anything were to hit the fan!
