Default Rattle Can Paint Job on LMT MWS .308

For a bout a year or so now, I have been wanting a super cool FDE .308 AR. I managed to acquire a LMT MWS .308 and decked it out in super cool Magpul FDE furniture as seen here
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...4&postcount=22

I was content.

BUT after seeing the KAC M110 Carbine, I figured it wouldn't hurt to change the look again

M110 Carbine:

I didnt want to go all crazy with my gun and put something on it that would be hard to take off, so I decided that I would paint my LMT with a rattle can (that way I can strip everything off if I hate the look). I came across this thread on how to get close to FDE with a rattle can:
http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=172592

Today, I gave it a go and this is how it turned out!

Not too bad for a rattle can job. It matches a lot better than my camera will allow you to see. It is MUCH closer to FDE in person, but it is still a tad bit lighter. Now I am one tiny mall-ninja step closer to having a M110 carbine clone (which would be impossible given the nature of the LMT's monolithic upper, but shhh).

Looks great, although a little glossy. What type of paint is it?

Nice job though!! I haven't had the cajones to paint any of my ARs yet.

Thanks! Yes it is a little glossy, I will take some steel wool to it until it decides to be a lot more matte. It is Rustoleum Dark Taupe combined with a little Rustoleum Oregano, both in satin flavor.

I was very scared to do this but considering how cool the M110 carbine looks and after testing it on a Cosco flashlight, I figured it was worth a shot.

Thanks guys

The funny thing is that I tried to go for the Magpul FDE look but instead seem to be closer to the Desert Tan Cerakote look on the M110 Carbine. Its all good though!

Dooooooode? You should have hit me up!

It actually looks really good. And it looks like you took the selector and pins out, normally if a rattle can job is going to give you problems you'll know right off the bat because it will chip when you put those parts back in. It doesn't look like that is an issue, it came out super clean.
If you're at all concerned about longevity of the paint or it does become an issue, hit me up...

I know how much you love the Cerakote, I'd have taken care of you!

You should try Brownell's Aluma Hyde II if you want a closer match to Magpul FDE. This is one I did last year, the paint isn't all the way cured yet in this pic, so it looks a bit glossy and color shades are uneven.

This one is duracoat's idea of Magpul FDE... it's not very close at all:

Nice paint job. I do agree on the "too glossy" feedback. But as Technique stated, "The sheen will subside with normal wear and tear".

OP nice paint job..

Did you seal it? If not, you can go out and get some Matte flat clear seal, that will take the shine off...

Please let us know how it holds up too..

Lol

Actually......I had an mag in the mag well while I sprayed so that the mag release button wouldstick out a bit so that the paint would get behind it (I didnt take it out because the one hex key I was missing so happened to be the one that I needed).

So I do have a FDEish PMAG. Hopefully I can strip it without melting the mag

This was kind of a cheap trial run to see if I would like the color scheme. If I decide to make this permanent, I will for sure go through you Tech!

Thanks Link,

I did not seal it. Thanks for the heads up on the matte flat clear seal. I will likely get it today!

I am quite surprised that it came out so well. This is my first rattle can job.

+1 I used that on my 308AR and it looks very good, matches the magpul FDE furniture perfectly. I was going for a little M110 inspired look also

I hear a lot of good things about Alumahide and how it matches the FDE stuff very well.

For this project I wanted the paint to be removable, so Alumahide was out of the question.

Post pics of your FDE .308!

Yes, but that optic on the M110 carbine is probably a tad more expensive than I am willing to pay right now . There's no doubt that it is worth every penny though.

BTW, does anyone know what optic is on the M110 carbine in my OP? I'm guessing either USO, Premier, the new Leupy...or?
