you should build a .308 ar. If you do it right it will be as accurate as an out of the box remington 700, and only slightly heavier than a ar-15 in 5.56

Get some non thick-walled receivers if you can find them, a medium contour 16 inch barrel, the .308 version of the trx-e rail, a super sniper 1-4 scope, a geisselle trigger, whatever irons you like, and voila.

    But thats my dream...

And I highly reccomend a shotgun, fun stuff right there.

        FAL
        M1a
        Garand

That way you can list your big 3 my cal. small, medium, and large semi-auto's. Since you already have two rifles in an AR and AK platform your third should be something else. Any of those would make great additions to any collection and they all can be accurate to a reasonable degree.

I love accurate bolt guns but you have another option..... Built a super accurate AR upper in like 6.5G. Gives you more range than 308 in a smaller AR-15 receiver. Those 6.5 toothpick bullets are just amazing at long range.

I would vote shotgun. You will have the ability to hit the skeet/trap range for fun. Much different experience than punching paper. If you are looking to experience something different and have fun. Shotgun is the ticket. One of the most versatile firearms you can ever own.

This may just be the gun nut in me but since you opened this up I'll answer.

I would get a pump shotgun first. I like a Mossberg 500 but a Remington 870 is just as good to most people, heck a lot would say better. I just love my 500. Great for HD and a lot of fun to shoot, favorite of mine actually. These shot guns are just a few hundred $200-$300 most of the time and other then a sling noting to add to them so it is a cheap option.

Next you need a .22LR like people have said. Cheap ammo. Fun to shoot. Easy to teach kids and wives. A good .22 is just a blast. I would choose a 10/22 like someone else said. Cheap again a few hundred. However with this you can get accessories out the wazoo. I have a custom target and a simple hunting one.

Then like many said you do not have a larger caliber. I would get a .308. This will cost you for a decent one though. Rifles will be 1-2 grand probably and optics will be as much normally.

If I were you I would get a 10/22 and a 500 and then save for you .308 in either a Remington 700 platform or a .308 AR and deck this one out.

meh just make it a life long project, add another so you can have both a precision rifle (i.e. remington 700) and a shotgun (i.e. mossberg 500)

Yea its been a hard choice.. thankfully i dont HAVE to decide by a certain time but, I am liking the idea of having 3 main semi auto "battle rifles". the 3rd being possibly a FAL. I would personally prefer to have all 3 be a different type. (no ar in 5.56 then another in .308). Then again... im dreaming of having a decked out precision rifle... And with the shotgun, I do have an old J.C. Higgins 583.23 that ive shot A LOT of trap with so i have a good amount of experience with shotguns, as well as shooting some of my buddies just to get a taste on what i want. So as of now, its a decision between....

                  1) FAL
                  2) SCAR
                  3) some other "battle rifle" in a large caliber (.308 or higher)

                  OR

                  1) precision rifle

                  2) shotgun

difficult... the priority currently id say is FAL or Prec. Rifle.

Mosin Nagant would be perfect next

and a Mossberg 500 wouldnt hurt

Precision rifle is what you need.

You have all the spray and pray, semi autos already.
