As others have stated. You can get a real 5.56 (standard) version of that rifle for not too much more than that and make it CA legal.

The .22 version at big 5 is made my umerex(sp?) Its a airsoft company, they are not the best quality you would be better off going with the 15-22 by smith and wesson or the ruger sr22 as stated above. I did the same as a few other guys, 5.56 rifle I built and went with the spikes conversion kit

The Big5 one is the Colt stamped, Walther made. Umarex distributed ppl have been talking about. I love mine. Umarex distributes alot of products, including airguns and airsoft products. The M4 22lr is made by Walther, in germany. I've put ~120 rounds through mine so far. Heres one review:

"The Complete book of Guns 2011 Buyers Guide" magazine also reviewed it. All praise except that fully dissasembling it is a PITA.

Turner's has it on sale for $459, 10 less than big5 currently

oh and this thread should be in the rimfire forum

If you want a 22lr get a 22lr. The Ruger 10/22 is a great one. AR 15 type rifles are a whole different story. I can never understand why anyone uses a 22lr conversion in an AR especially when you can get a regular 22lr for about the same price as the conversion and sometimes less.

Where are you located? The Shootist in Murrieta stocks 6920, 6720s and a few others.

Purchased my aero lower from Parallax Tactical for 75ea. cause I purchased 2. Lpk $50 and m4 stock $50. I have the upper at home the lowers i pick up this Sat. The rest its on its way. This will be my first build.

Based on reviews the S&W 15-22 is supposed to be better than the Colt as far as AR-15 look alike .22LR rifles. The Sig 522, while not looking like the AR but instead just like the Sig 556, is supposed to be the most reliable of the "tactical" .22's out there from all reviews I've read. (I don't own either, I own a GSG-5 which is not entirely reliable)
