Colt M4 Carbine at Big 5

I'm new to rifles. Does anyone have any thoughts on a Colt M4 Carbine? I saw this at Big 5 today.

Get the Smith and Wesson 15-22 instead.

Something tells me he's not aware that it's a .22.

If you're wanting a .22 that looks like an AR, there are several other better options. If you want a real deal AR-15 style rifle, then you won't be finding a Colt in California, but you can put something together that looks a lot like an M4 for $800+.

Not true. While it is pretty hard to find, they are out there. Ammo Bros had one a few weeks ago. There are OLL colts

do yourself a favor and read up on offlist lowers (OLL's) before you make a purchase, after you know more about them you will be able to make an informed decision on the actual options and style of rifle you want. You might want to find an OLL-friendly dealer in your area and swing by there to check them out.

Especially since the rifle offered at Big 5 is not even a real AR type rifle (just looks like one on the outside)!

Yep, the receivers are not compatible with standard AR15 platform.

Honestly I would look at a Ruger SR-22. If you go to Big 5 and handle all the .22 AR style rifles you will find they are all very PLASTIC feeling except the SR-22. It has that heavy metal feel to it because it is metal and not plastic/polymer. It is basically a 10/22 with a AR style kit on it and we all know that the 10/22 is the best selling rimfire rifle EVER.

Avoid the Colt M4 22LR. Go with the S&W or a dedicated 22LR upper (Spikes, Tac Sol, CMMG).
The Model 610 was classified as the XM177[3] but adopted by the Air Force as the GAU-5/A Submachine Gun (GAU = Gun, Aircraft, Unit.) The Army purchased 2,815 Model 609 CAR-15 Commandos on June 28, 1966, which were officially designated Submachine Gun, 5.56 mm, XM177E1. - Wikipedia
