Turners Transfer free (FFL fee) is a joke!!!

I had a long talk with a "kitchen table" FFL yeaterday (a ridiculous appelation since most of those FFLs were wipoed out during Clinton.
More like a small gun store owner -- he still must have safe, secure area, alarm, etc.,
anyway, he's charging around $100 for a transfer -- AND CA state "Use tax" AND DROS AND he says a lot of the out of state sellers are now ALSO charging sales tax THERE -- which makes a stripped lower a $250 hit (I bought a couple of Spikes for $90@ just before Obama elected)
What does this mean?
Stores are greedy?
Again, they have expenses, and they are in fact a little pissed when we just don't order what we want through them. We have to live with this. BTW, it is as silly to just buy a stripped lower as it is to take $20 out of your ATM and pay the $2.50 charge. Obliviously it makes more sense to take 200 or 300 out of teh ATM so the hit is not as great a percentage.
So the transfer hit on a stripped lower is the same as a complete lower, or a complete gun. So it makes more sense to get one of those, see?
But i get it -- you JUST want a stripped lower. In most of LA, you are screwed. While they HAVE to be registered, we are at the whims of our state fees, etc.
Just stop posting about individual stores -- they are all being hit, too.
We just have to put a little more thought into how and what we buy.
The state put in all these fees, etc., to discourage us from buying guns.
It has definitely slowed me down. six, seven years ago, I tried to buy a gun a month or so.
I'll wait to get what I want when I''m living in nevada.Comment

Personally, I don't blame Turners for charging a higher fee for doing transactions that they're not making any money off of. The time it takes to do the transfer, the paperwork, and making sure everything is correct and legal, just isn't worth the hassle if you're not making money off of it and some other business is. Imagine owning a business, only to have your customers coming in with another companies product day in and day out. Granted they may not carry a particular firearm that someone has found out of state, miles away, or privately, but when you buy guns like Glocks, HK's, Beretta, ect., that they do carry, I think offering low transfer fee's only encourage buying elsewhere.
I've always believed in supporting any local business, especially gun stores, because when our wonderful state really gets crazy and bans shipping firearms (locally or out of state), then we would be F*ed. I want to save money just as much as the next person, but sometimes it worth it just to pay the litte extra to keep the local guys in business. But I'm not talking about paying $150 for a transfer because that is crazy, but it's only crazy because we have alot of other options (at the moment).sigpic
I take it you're not here for the alcohol or the tobacco

PPT fees are different from FFL transfer fees. PPT fees are regulated while FFL transfer fees are not.Comment

Yes, the world would be a better place if shops like Turners would just pay rent for space, fill their shelves with guns that people have been begging for (just so they could see them on the shelf apparently), and employ people to fill out paperwork for customers that bought their rifles elsewhere for no cost.
Unfortunately that is not the world we live in. I don't support price gouging of any kind but can you blame a shop for a high transfer fee?
Everyone complains about shops who don't carry what they want. Then the shop gives in and puts those items out there. Then the customer buys something else or even that same exact item from somewhere else to save a few bucks. Brick and mortar stores cost money to operate. If you want to undercut the guy with the store by buying on the internet why would you expect that same guy to finish your deal for no profit?Comment

You obviously haven't shopped around
Turners wants you to buy their guns so when you want to try transferring a firearm they charge ludacrous amounts in hopes you just buy what they sell. Screw them shop elsewhere!

Most of our local gun shops charge $35 for a PPT (DROS+$10 profit). This is pretty standard. But what is the first thing most people do when they pick up their gun...buy ammo, cleaning supplies, holsters, locks, safes, etc. They made $180 when all was said and done. They may only make $10 off of the transfer, but it's likely that they will get some business from you while you're in the store.Personally, I don't blame Turners for charging a higher fee for doing transactions that they're not making any money off of. All the more reason for people to buy guns and lowers from their local stores.anyway, he's charging around $100 for a transfer -- AND CA state "Use tax" AND DROS AND he says a lot of the out of state sellers are now ALSO charging sales tax THERE -- which makes a stripped lower a $250 hit (I bought a couple of Spikes for $90@ just before Obama elected)Comment

The OP has to be talking about an FFL to FFL from out of state. PPT's can only be $35 by law as mentioned already. Stores charge crazy money for out of state transfers because they don't want to do them. If they do have to do them, they at least make it worth their while. The cheapest I have seen was $90-$100 (which includes the $25 dros fee). I have seen $250 before. While I don't agree with it.....It is legal and they can charge whatever they want for out of state transfers.Comment

I'm a regular Turner's customer and have bought at least a half dozen guns from them over the years and will probably buy more in the course of my life. Hell, i've bought from Turners even though i can get it cheaper online. But sometimes you find a unique, limited or hard to find piece and have no choice but shop online. But $150 for an FFL transfer is not a reasonable profit. And why do the smaller gun shops able to do it for a reasonable fee? They pay rent and have similar overhead as Turners. In a way, Turners is saying that they only want me as a customer if i buy guns from them. Performing services for a reasonable fee goes a long way in building customer relationships. Just my.02.Comment

They don't want to do them huh? That's a good thing. All the smaller gun businesses do. I'd rather let the smaller guys grow so the whole gun community has a wider variety of places to go. $50 is an average price for a transfer.
$150 for a transfer is a slap in the face and I find it a bit disrespectful.Last edited by b00gym4n; 09-14-2010, 9:16 AM.
