Nowhere is it illegal for you to PURCHASE a hi cap mag. Regardless of knowingly purchasing one, or not, it is NOT illegal. SELLING a hi cap to a non-LEO, is illegal. The seller violated the law, not the purchaser.

The ULTIMATE bottom line is that POSSESSION of a hi cap mag regardless of how you came to own it is NOT A CRIME. The USE of a hi-cap is not a crime either, with the exception of using in fixed mag centerfire rifle or off list single shot pistol that has been converted.

So congrats to OP, you have a legally obtained hi cap. And yes, take advantage and go rebuild it into a 20 or 30rd mag if you please (just be careful what you use it with).
huh, guess there was something I missed.......very good to know! being armed with information is always a good thing, thanks for clearing that up for me, I really thought it was the other way around!!

Jeez I can't believe all these senior members who don't knwo anything about this stuff. High-Caps are legal to own. Do not use in a fixed magazine rifle. Fine to use in a featureless.

C'mon guys, very very simple stuff here.
not sure where i said he can't own one....i own plenty and i've never said that possession was illegal. I was under the impression that purchasing was illegal, but the above post shed some light on that for me and cleared things up. Go ahead and take that chill pill now buddy...here, i got it ready for you

I just hate to see him put it in his pistol grip ar-15 and turn it into a "assault weapon" from an 11 rounder. Also, IMO I think you're giving him terrible advice to convert his 11/30 into a 20 or 30 rd mag. You say it's legal which might be true, but do you really want to fight that battle in court and waste a bunch of money you could use to buy new toys with? Esp, over a ridiculous cal gun law?

If I have a large-capacity magazine, do I need to get rid of it?
No. Continued possession of large-capacity magazines (able to accept more than 10 rounds) that you owned in California before January 1, 2000, is not prohibited. However as of January 1, 2000,
it is illegal to buy, manufacture, import, keep for sale, expose for sale, give or lend any large-capacity magazine in California except by law enforcement agencies, California peace officers, or licensed dealers.

    (PC Section 12020 (b)(19-29))

Attorney General says it is illegal to buy. You say its legal to buy. Maybe the site has a typo. I'm lost more than ever.
this is where i was getting my thoughts on purchasing being illegal from.......i guess now that it was really pointed out to me (even though i've read that penal code multiple times) it makes more sense, but you can see how people would be easily confused. I wouldn't want to play with the grey area and leave it up to a judge and jury who most likely don't know jack about gun laws and would side with the AG on this one....

OP, guess you got lucky. Just make sure you follow all the other applicable laws and you should be G2G. have fun

Am I at risk, legally, by possessing this mag? Should I take it back to the store where I bought it, or should I just say screw it?
      Moto4Fun,

Since it was designed to hold 10 rounds then if you bought it legit then I would assume you can't be held resonsible. Besides if you do get pulled over there not going to load it up to see if it holds more than 10 rounds. They can tell it's a California magazine and won't bother.

Keep quiet and keep shooting. And for heavens sake stop loading 11 into it, and stop posting about it.

this is bad advice. take it back immediately. get it out of your possession.

Exactly. Thus, with that 11-round large capacity magazine, the OP can now rebuild it to a 30-rounder and with a RAW or featureless rifle, use it legally and drop it with a fully functional mag release button. WIN!

for G*d's sake do not tell us where you bought it because they might also have committed an offense by manufacturing the magazine.

11 rounds? That means one less squirrel digging up the back forty before you have to reload.
