You may want to decide what upper you want first. 308 is not a standard weapon so the lower will depend on that type of upper you're getting. For example, I ordered a dpms upper so I had to get a cmmg lower that is built to fit that. If you get noveske, you need a noveske lower. Basically, from what I've seem, the most common aRe the dpms style and the armalite style... but, I'm like 30 days ahead of you building my 308 so I'm sure people here will be bale to clarify a little more... hope that helps

      you must define "the best..."
      what's the best car?
      what's the best house?
      what's the best firearm?
      get the point yet...
there is no "best." there is only what's best for you

...Just picked up two Tactical Machining lowers. VERY happy with the company so far. I recommend them! $410 for two of 'em, delivered... Can't beat that.

You need to decide what platform and magazine you want before you can decide which lower.

How does the actual magazine affect the choice in lower? Will some mags not work?

Armalite ( or modified M-14) mags for AR-10 and variants thereof lowers, DPMS mags for DPMS .308 and variants thereof lowers and FAL mags for Bushmaster .308; the mags are different and will not interchange.

Go with the DPMS platform. They use the SR-25 type mags, including the new .308 PMAGs. Im getting an Iron Ridge Arms set of receivers in Desert Tan. Theyre pretty damn sexy. 23 MOA cant built into the receiver as well.

I will +1 the jd upper lower combo. Met those guys at the oc gun show and they knew their stuff and they had some great stuff. I went with dpms because it was more affordable and they have a decent reputation. You're looking at 2700 minimum for a jd build and 3500 for a j and j build, both too much for me. I figure with a dpms upper (990) and all the bells and whistles, I can get mine built for about 2300. Anyway, gottan choose a platform first, just wanted to show off what I've learned in the last month cruising the forum. ;P

You can build a .308 for around $1,200.00 with a Tactical Machining lower, and a DPMS upper.

I have a wholesale account with Brownells, and will have less than $1,000.00 in mine when I'm done.
