    Tactical levergun

Well, among all these off list lowers I'm looking for a Marlin Lever gun to play with. I know I can send it off for trigger work and shortening the barrel, does anyone know of a local smith who can do these things for me ?

+1, does anyone in California shorten barrels on lever actions? I'd really like to build a tactical lever action myself.

How short do you need it? Marlin already makes a 357 mag Lever Carbine with a 18 1/2" bbl, and others with a 20" bbl.
Winchester made.makes its Model 94 in a "Trapper" version with a 16" bbl, comes in 45 LC, 44 Mag, and 357 Mag.

Screw the .357. You need a Marlin 1895G in .45-70. The trigger work you can do yourself!! There are a few websites dedicated to this.

I'd personally like a Marlin 30/30 in a 16" barrel. Currently they are 20" if I am not mistaken.

My wife's Winchester '94 already has a 16" bbl on it and a larger loop on the lever. I assumed that 16" was always an option on models.

The 16" models are no longer an option.

The cutting of the barrel is something that should be able to be done by any local smith. It's a fairly easy operation.

There is a lot of work that you can do (reliability and trigger) yourself. If you get a Marlin, visit marlinowners.com. There is a lot of information there including how to completely disassemble your rifle and perform a trigger job (primarily involvs cutting a couple springs).

puma makes plenty of '92 clones in 16", including one in .454 casull (either blued or stainless).

Cutting and recrowning a barrel isn't hard, you can do it yourself properly in an hour (or two if you want to be very careful.)

Trigger work is very easy on leverguns, and as stated above, lots of sites online will guide you through the step-by-step.

As I've said before, I own a bunch of OLL's but my favorite rifles are leverguns. I may even try one of the tactical shoots up at Chabot with my .357 mag '94C sometime soon.

                    .

I was expecting a picture of a level gun that someone had "tacti-cooled" with a collapsable buttstock and forward pistol grip.

Check out the Alaskan Co-pilot, a Marlin lever action-based take-down rifle for Alaskan bush pilots. It's only $2230.00 in the awesome .50 Alaskan caliber, or the new .457 Wild West Magnum (350 gr bullet at 2200fps or a
405gr at 2000fps) 40 inches of penatration at 100 yards into an Alaskan brown bear.

Scooter, how's the recoil on the Marlin? Also does the price of ammo discourage you from firing the rifle?

I'm asking because I'm seriously thinking about picking up the 1895G.

Yost Bonitz has some pretty "cool" levergun conversions too.

I love my mariln guide gun in 45-70!!!! You can re-load ammo witha hand tool and it gets a lot cheaper. Recoil is not bad at all thanks to a nice recoil pad, muzzle break and the ability to up-load or down-load you rounds by either handloading or buying the various types of ammo available.

My only regret is that I got an original in blue rather than a later one in SS.

I've mounted the XS forward scout scope base. The now optional ghost ring sights came stock with my 2nd year made rifle.

The wild west gun is an IMPRESSIVE rifle. Ifired one and fell in love with it. I just can't afford the price!!!! If you buy a used SS rifle and have it shipped up there it is cheaper though and I just might be able to afford it

Get one in their caliber that also shoots the 45-70 rounds. Its a mulit-caliber rifle that REALLY performs. You can take it down and pack it to boot!!!

I have owned a Rossi Puma 16 in 357 lever action rifle for about 15 years now. Its one of my favorite rifles and Wally World ammo makes it almost affordable to shoot I bet I have cycled over 10,000 rounds of ammo through it over the years with a mix of 38, 38+P, 38+P+ and 357 mag rounds. Its convenient size, light weight, quick to bring to shoulder, cycles smooth and fast and has a good trigger. I highly recomend them over the Marlin that can get the "marlin jams". I also have a problem of ridding the trigger with the side of my finger while cycling the actions on lever guns. On the Marlins I end up pinching my finger in the mechanism and can't shoot anymore due to the loss of feeling in my finger
