Mare's Leg! Yes .... but what was not right about the ammo?????
If I remember correctly, the ammo that he carried in his belt loops was .45-70, but the Mare's Leg was actually a .38/.357. I think that's right.

Almost there! The director thought the 45-70 shells looked cool on the belt, but the 1892 Winchester was really a 38-40 ( one of the "real" pistol / rifle combo cartridges from the Old West ... the .45 Colt we know today was not really used in rifles back then).

Don't know if I could hit something with a sawed-off 45-70 shooting from the hip, anyway!

(side note) Anyone ever try one of those 45-70 derringers? I actually shot one, but only with the 45 Colt rounds.

Im bringing up an old thread but wouldnt thoes be legal under the single action exemption from the drop test? You have to manually cock it for it to reload, any one else getting excited?

huh wow, never considered that, it is single action, and would fufill the length requirements, however in the larger calibers, it might not meet the 5 round capacity requirement.

                I would recomend 18"...

I had Mike's Gunsmithing in Long Beach cut one of my Marlins to 16" and I will admit it is handy.

Then I picked up a straight grip with and 18" bbl and found I liked it much better. I am not sure why, but muzzle blast seem to be less severe and I don't miss much in terms of compact ness.

                Here is a good thread:

I think a 336 make a great defensive rifle. I also like the 125 Grn. Federal loads.

                  I forgot to add..

that wild west guns has a light mount that works great. I have one on my .45/70 and it is going on my next Alaska adventure. Most of our critter problems were at night and this make that much easier to deal with.

I have a question for you leverheads; 45-70 or 450 marlin? It seems that 45-70 may be more popular and I wondered why that might be. Does anyone own a BLR and how does it compare to a Marlin?
