    Dude,

Just buy some ammo and use the real stuff if you are troubleshooting a problem. Why introduce another unpredictable variable (blanks and a BFA) when trying to narrow down and resolve a function problem...

Doing so would be "not smart."

BTW if you think firing blanks might change the status of the rifle in CA - ie allow you to play with an AW - then I think you are really really doing something not smart...

      1) My primary reason for using blanks was to function test mags. If the round loaded into the rifle fine, but failed to fire, this wouldn't be a mag problem.2) I was going to use this

      to test mags.

And if you read my thread you'd know this... you'd also know that my range doesn't allow rapid firing except at the IPSC range. There it is 10 yards to the target, possibly 20 to the backstop. Shooting 7.62NATO rounds at a backstop full of dirt, rocks and other slugs isn't my idea of fun...

You'd also know (if you read the thread) that I'm not going to use blanks to function test my mags and that this thread was over.

Like I said, that is the same grip I use. Duraglock is a great guy. Chabot's tac rifle uses the ranges that are 50-75 yds.

            Just had a thought...

How do those WWII re-enactors and the newer 'Nam re-enactors run their rifle on blanks? Are they jam-o-matics or do blanks actually function well?

Depends on the weapon. Blank adapted guns tend to be finicky. More so then live fire. A well set up gun with good blanks can run like a top.

In the big picture, dedicated blank fire guns tend to be much more reliable then guns set up to run them part time.

Testing your rifle/mags with blanks will ONLY tell you if they work with blanks.
Each ammo type will have a different gas signature.
It's the gas that cycles the action.
Just because you can get it to run with blanks, don't EXPECT it to also work with live ammo.
Blanks have a completely different shape than real ammo so you are not testing the feeding in a similar manner to live ammo.

Since you are not testing like live ammo, your testing is a waste if you expect similar results with live ammo.
I would suggest that you just put the gun in the safe.
Ammo is expensive so don't buy any.

Go to the range and find someone else with a similar gun and watch them shoot theirs.
Yours will be just like that, only you don't have to worry about getting it dirty or spending any money if you just keep it all oiled up in the safe.
If they are a good shooter, you can even take pictures of their target and post them as your own.
                Nobody else will know.

If your FAL is reliable shooting slowly, one round a second, it will be reliable in rapid fire as well. It is a machine, it does not know "slow" or "fast." The bolt goes back at the same speed no matter how fast you pull the trigger.

I would have to disagree, rate of fire can exacerbate underlaying problems.

I am just saying if it jams going "fast", it will jam going "slow." A full auto bolt and feed ramp are the same as a semi for the most part (I know FA is a little heavier.)

                          Blank Ammo.....

Blanks have just enough powder to cycle the action, nothing more.
If you are going to test your magzine, Then blow a few bucks for a tank of gas and drive to a range that allows rapid-fire and test your magazines there.

I do use blanks here in the town of Paradise, At my shop, and have no problems with our local Police.............. yet

Of course, I live down a lane and a little off the beaten path.

Another idea, test your magazines on July 4th..... People will think you are setting off Firecrackers.

                          Just a thought.

If it does not run well, it won't go out into the field, just like its live fire counterpart... Having heard more than a few full-on WWII reenactor firefights, there are not many guns in the field that do not work well.

Its mostly a matter of getting the barrel restrictor holes to the right size to get the correct amount of gas pressure to fully cycle the action.

There are also specially made full length rifle blanks for guns that won't feed short blanks well such as the Russian SVT40 and DP28.

                            I have successfully blanked:
                            Russian
                            SVT40
                            SKS
                            Multiple Romanian AKs
                            Romanian RPK

                            German
                            P38
G43 (with some help from Apfeltor)

                            Currently working on
                            German
M53 (MG42) Probably one of the hardest guns to blank. Really wants a specially made factory 2 piece blank barrel.

                            Russian (designs)
                            SG43 - needs smaller restrictor
DP28 - still in DROS jail, but I have the factory blank adapter and long blanks
RPD - was tested at Project Guns with blanks and i have the factory blank adapter, so I do not anticipate any problems.
                            Romanian TT33

The Russian guns in 7.62x39 have commercially available surplus blank adapters and there is surplus blank ammo designed to work with the adapters, so they are generally very easy to blank adapt.

Blanks can run from cheap (4 cents a round for .308) to 50 cents (special long blanks for MGs and some semi auto rifles).
