Rifle was in battery every time and had been cleaned the night before shooting. I cannot recall if there was an indentation on the primer or not, but I do recall that the ammo did fire the 2nd time around...

If you went to the trouble to test with blanks, the only thing that you would have proved is that your rifle feeds and fires...blanks...

On the fal, you also have to set the gas position, and you'll need a different setting for blanks than what you'd need for live ammo.
I'd be testing mags not the rifle.

This thread is a FAIL, the question should be why does my FAL fail to fire not I can blanks use to test my guns ability to fail to fire.

arent blanks almost as expensive as REAL ammo.

i bought some dummy rounds for my AR, ten dollars for a couple FAKE bullets!

          Then you need these:

          Not blanks.
The way some gunshop clerks spout off, you'd think that they invented gunpowder and the repeating rifle, and sat on the Supreme Court as well.

JASON YOU NEED TO BE MORE SPECIFIC. WHAT TYPE OF AMMO WHERE YOU USING. JUST BECAUSE IT WENT BANG THE 2ND TIME AROUND WOULD INDICATE A HIGH PROBABILITY OF DEFECTIVE AMMO! BUY SOME RECENTLY MANUFACTURED AMMO. ABOUT 100 RND TO TEST IT. AND THIS TIME EXAMINE YOUR PRIMERS ON EVERY SHELL TO SEE IF THEY ALL HAVE PROPER PRIMER INDENTATIONS. DID YOU CHECK YOUR FIRING PINS CONDITION? IF FIRING PIN IS GOOD AND USING NEW AMMO BUT STILL GETTING MISFIRES AND LIGHT PRIMER STRIKES, TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR HAMMER ASSLY CONDTION.

I'd be testing mags not the rifle. The 2nd issue is the failure to fire.

I don't think you understand... the reason for using blanks is to test my magazines with a non-wrap around grip (read - monster man style grip). 2nd priority would be the FTF.

That does nothing for me... I'd be testing to check that my magazines still function reliably, and dummy rounds wouldn't cut it. I cannot hand cycle the action as fast as it would naturally.

I don't know if you're going to get the answer you want. It sounds to me like you just really want to do this.

If it were me I'd either find a place I can shoot faster (BLM, the desert, NV) or just not sweat it.

Nothing can tell you whether real ammo will feed or function except real ammo. Further, the specific loading can affect function - for example, heavy bullets can cause nose-diving in some mags, leading to FTF.

Testing should always be as real as possible.

WTF whats with the non-wrap around grip. were did that come from? grip has no bearing on functionality of said rifle. if you persist in wanting to use blanks. blanks will only verify movement of bolt, hammer strike, trigger assly.,mag with BLANK AMMO. you still need to adjust gas regulator to function with blanks. you also need correct muzzle break with correct blank firing adaptor, plus correct blanks to go with it. you`ll need a quite a few blanks to dail it in. lol

Another thing you need to worry about is the kind of blanks you are using. You will often see grenade launching rounds sold as "blanks". These rounds are way to powerful to use with a blank firing adapter and may cause serious injury if you try.

Blanks do not feed or function like live ammo does. You will be tinkering with your gun so much in order to get the blanks to work that you'll likely be creating new problems and wasting a lot of time.

Any results you get with blanks will need to be reverified with live ammo anyway.

Might be fun, but you don't want to replace sound gunsmithing with this idea.

Meant to read as a monster man style grip i.e. cannot wrap your thumb around it. Sorry for not being clear about it.

As for my decision, it sounds like I'd be better off just using live ammo somewhere outside CA.

                        Thanks all.

Even with a BFA your not going to be able to get real world results
#1 blanks are dirty and fowl up your rifle
#2 your not going to get comparable pressures with blanks and a BFA
just take it to the range and try it with real bullets

Don't think it'd be good to use a MMG style grip at a tac rifle event... and a bullet button just wouldn't cut it.

Not everyone has a RAW. Most of the people there use featureless guns. I have been competing for a year now with a featureless gun. A few people use guns with mag locks.
